Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards welcomed back Mitch Richmond and Rod Strickland with their first road win in more than a month.

Juwan Howard scored 21 points, including a key late jumper, as the Wizards recorded their third straight victory, 106-99 over the stumbling Atlanta Hawks.

Washington used 10-of-15 3-point shooting and strong play by Richard Hamilton and Chris Whitney, who replaced Richmond and Strickland in the starting lineup, for its first three-game winning streak since March.

"They were in control for basically the whole game," Whitney said. "Jason Terry came out and played extraordinarly well for them the whole game. He got them going early but down the stretch we made the stops and were able to get back into the game."

The Wizards had not won away from home since a 103-95 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers on December 17.

Alan Henderson's jumper with 4:23 to play gave the Hawks a 94-91 lead, but the Wizards answered with a 9-0 run to take command. Hamilton hit two straight jumpers, Jahidi White made a pair of free throws and Whitney nailed a 3-pointer to give Washington a 100-94 lead with 57 seconds to go.

After Terry made two free throws to pull the Hawks within 100-96, Howard replied with a jumper that just beat the shot clock and restored a six-point cushion with 25 seconds to play.

Washington made 11-of-17 shots along with all 10 of its free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

"When you let a team like that build their momentum and (get) confidence back, they felt that there was a chance for them to win the ball game," Atlanta center Dikembe Mutombo said.

Whitney nailed four 3-pointers and scored 18 points while Hamilton had 17. Richmond netted 18 points in his first game since December 2 and Strickland had six and 10 assists in his first action since December 27.

"We didn't really know how to plan with the return of Mitch Richmond because we didn't know to what extent we'd be able to utilize our returning players," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "We pushed them as far as we could and we just hope they are able to come back tomorrow."

Richmond had missed 25 games in a row with his left knee injury.

"It's better than I thought it would be," Richmond said. "Now I've got to figure out how we can bring it back-to-back. It's good to get a win. We try to look for anything that is positive. This was a positive one. It was a team effort, a great victory."

Terry's jumper with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter gave Atlanta its largest lead at 77-63. Washington scored nine of the next 14 points to close the period and trailed, 81-72.

"Plain and simple, we had five games we just lost in a row," Terry said. "We can't really think about it now, it's gone. I can't deny though that it hurts."

Terry scored 31 points and dished out 10 assists for Atlanta, which has lost five straight. Henderson had 22 off the bench but could not prevent the Hawks from losing to the Wizards for the second time in six days.
