Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- New Jersey Nets coach Byron Scott returned to the city where he won three NBA titles as a player only to be reminded again how far his current team is from capturing one of its own.

Isaiah Rider scored a season-high 24 points, including seven straight during a fourth-quarter burst, as the Los Angeles Lakers spoiled Scott's homecoming with a 113-101 victory over the Nets.

Scott won world championships with the "Showtime" Lakers in 1985, 1987 and 1988 as a shooting guard alongside Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabaar and Magic Johnson.

"I've got a lot of respect for this organization," Scott said. "I told our guys we don't have anything to lose."

On Friday, he watched Los Angeles' current shooting guard and two potential Hall of Famers turn away a solid effort by his slumping club.

Shaquille O'Neal had 26 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and Kobe Bryant added 26 points and nine boards. But it was Rider who did in Scott and the Nets.

"I think this is the most assertive I've been, the most aggressive I've been," Rider said. "I said I'm gonna turn up my play, be aggressive and take my shots. If I do that, I know I'll be productive."

Stephon Marbury hit a pair of free throws to pull New Jersey within 101-95 with 3:40 to play. Rider missed a 10-footer on the ensuing trip but grabbed the rebound and was good from 11 feet.

He and Marbury traded baskets during the next sequence before Rider put the game out of reach when he connected on a 26-footer with 1:31 remaining, stretching the advantage to 108-98.

"He did well under pressure," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said of Rider, a player he has been at odds with at times this season. "It's the best I've seen him play with this team. He's one of our best shooters."

"(Rider) played very well tonight," Bryant added. "He was very aggressive, got us going there in the fourth quarter and he played like he is capable of playing."

Coming off Wednesday's humiliating 109-87 loss at Golden State, the Nets looked eager not to embarrass Scott but suffered their third straight loss on a five-game road trip.

"It was very acceptable," Scott said of his club's performance. "I thought our guys did a great job. I thought they played hard, they competed tonight. Rider was the x-factor tonight. He had 24 points and five offensive rebounds and that hurt us."

Stephon Marbury scored 33 points and Keith Van Horn added 25 for New Jersey, which stayed within 55-54 at the half and took a 59-58 lead on Marbury's 3-pointer with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Bryant responded with a 3-pointer, O'Neal converted a three-point play and Horace Grant made a layup as Los Angeles pulled in front for good, 66-59, with 8:34 left in the period.

Rookie Kenyon Martin slammed home a feed from Marbury to get the Nets back within four with less than a minute to go in the third quarter but O'Neal dunked and Grant made two free throws to make it 89-81 entering the fourth.

"We went out there and we played hard for 48 minutes," Martin said. "We just need to keep on attacking the basket, have fun and good things will happen."

Rick Fox scored 14 points and Grant added 10 for Los Angeles, which shot 51 percent (41-of-81), held a 43-32 rebounding advantage and made 23-of-29 free throws, including a suprising 8-of-12 performance by O'Neal.

Martin and Aaron Williams scored nine points apiece for the Nets, who shot 47.5 percent (38-of-80) and committed just eight turnovers after giving the ball away 23 times at Golden State.

The Lakers visit Scott's Nets on February 13.
