Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The way things went on Monday, the Los Angeles Clippers probably wish they could cancel their trip to San Antonio.

Tim Duncan had 16 points and eight rebounds before sitting out the fourth quarter and five others scored in double figures as the San Antonio Spurs routed the Clippers, 96-67, in the opener of a home-and-home series.

The Clippers trailed by 11 points midway through the first quarter, had a season-low 28 points at halftime and shot 35 percent (26-for-75) from the field as they suffered their 11th straight loss to the Spurs. Los Angeles, which has not defeated San Antonio since December 4, 1997, visits the Alamodome on Wednesday.

"We need leaders to step up," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "Me as a coach, I need to step up. I need to make sure we keep competing, and we keep playing hard and we keep playing the right way, unselfishly."

Malik Rose scored 13 points, Terry Porter added 12 and David Robinson 10 for the Spurs, who have won five in a row but remained one-half game behind first-place Utah in the Midwest Division.

"We've been up and down," Duncan said. "A little ebb and flow goes throughout the season. Right now we're playing really well. Two huge road wins (against Sacramento and Utah) and we're feeling good about ourselves. We're about to take off and hopefully we can keep it going."

Lamar Odom had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Clippers, who have dropped eight straight and are just 3-11 in January. Corey Maggette contributed 12 points in his return from the injured list. He suffered a mild concussion on January 13 in Atlanta.

Robinson snapped a 6-6 tie with a 12-foot jumper that started a 16-0 run as San Antonio took a 22-6 lead with 3:09 left in the first quarter. The Spurs shot a blistering 65 percent (13-for-20) during the period.

San Antonio, which held a 49-28 advantage at halftime, took a 30-point lead -- its largest of the game -- in the third quarter. After Eric Piatkowski's short jumper helped the Clippers come within 15 points, the Spurs went on a 20-5 run to take a 69-39 advantage on two free throws by Derek Anderson.

Los Angeles did not get closer than 20 points thereafter.

"This was one of those nights when we had a good game and it was just a bad night for the Clippers," Spurs coach Greg Popovich said. "It was a night they just couldn't get a shot to go down. We were the opposite. Everything we were shooting was going in. Our guys did a good job of being business like and being very serious about this ballgame."

Steve Kerr and Derrick Dial came off the bench to contribute 10 points apiece for San Antonio, which shot 52 percent (39-for-75), going 7-of-12 from 3-point range.

Anderson had nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Rose grabbed seven boards as the Spurs held a 50-35 edge in rebounds.

Odom was the only Clippers starter to score in double figures as Piatkowski, rookie Darius Miles, Jeff McInnis, and Michael Olowokandi combined for just 21 points and 13 rebounds. The Clippers were a woeful 1-for-12 from beyond the arc.

"They played really good defense on us tonight," Piatkowski said. "They didn't score that much, they were just stopping us on the other side."
