Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Anthony Mason celebrated his selection to the All-Star team with 19 points and 15 rebounds as the Miami Heat matched their season-high winning streak with a 103-85 rout of the Houston Rockets.

Mason received the first All-Star berth of his career as he was tabbed as one of the Eastern Conference's reserves earlier on Tuesday. The 6-8 power forward responded by helping the Heat to their fifth straight triumph, matching the run they had from December 22-30.

"This goes down as a great day," Mason said. "I give thanks to God. It made my day, my year and my life as special because it showed that guys appreciate an all-around game, not just scorers. I give a lot of thanks to the coaches for putting me on the team."

"I think it's a wonderful accomplishment for him," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "It's a great honor and I thought he played tonight to prove it."

Tim Hardaway scored all 15 of his points in the first half as Miami opened a 58-40 lead and never looked back, moving a season-high 10 games over .500 at 28-18.

Hardaway's backup at point guard, Anthony Carter, scored 16 points for Miami, which had seven scorers in double figures. The Heat have scored 100 or more points in three of their last four games after doing so in only six of their previous 42 contests.

Steve Francis had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Rockets, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Eddie Jones scored 14 points, Brian Grant 12, Bruce Bowen 11 and rookie Eddie House added 10 for Miami, which has gone 15-4 since a mediocre 13-14 start.

Hardaway, who also handed out 11 assists, heated up early. He opened the scoring with a 21-footer, drilled a 3-pointer on the Heat's next possession and nailed another jumper from the right corner to give Houston a 21-15 lead with 4:06 left in the first quarter.

"I got a great start tonight," Hardaway said. "I was just doing my thing. It wasn't anything special but it was my best start all year."

Hardaway added another 3-pointer before scoring a basket to increase the margin to 31-21 with less than a minute left in the opening period. The floor general also remembered Miami's earlier loss to Houston and took exception to some postgame comments by the Rockets after the setback.

"It was revenge," Hardaway said. "We wanted to come out and send a message. We read what they said in the paper about how if they were in the Eastern Conference, they would be a one or two seed. We showed them they are not a one or two seed. We showed them what the Eastern Conference is all about and we shut them up."

Mason had a free throw and two quick jumpers in the third quarter as Miami opened things up, taking a 63-42 lead with 9:31 remaining.

"I didn't want to stink tonight," Mason said. "With the game right after you get named to the All-Star team, you definitely want to show you belong."

Cuttino Mobley scored 22 points and Hakeem Olajuwon added 13 for Houston, which shot 34 percent (38-of-83) and held a 48-40 rebounding advantage.

Francis and Mobley both took exception to what they perceived as a lack of effort from their teammates.

"Some people looked like they didn't want to play tonight," Francis said. "If it was up to me, I would have put them on the bench. I'm not going to say any names but some people need to look in the mirror."

"We weren't in it at all tonight," Mobley said. "This team was not energized. I'm so mad right now and that's why I'm not saying much."

The Heat shot 51 percent (43-of-84) and committed just eight turnovers.
