Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Darrell Armstrong scored 23 points and dished out nine assists as the Orlando Magic rebounded from their worst offensive showing of the season with a 93-86 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Tracy McGrady scored 19 points and John Amaechi added 16 for Orlando, which was held to a season low in an 81-59 loss to Miami on Saturday. The win moved the Magic (20-23) into a tie with Cleveland for seventh place in the Eastern Conference, one-half game ahead of Indiana (20-24).

"I thought this game was very much like Saturday's game (against Miami) in a lot of ways because we were struggling to get shots to go in and they were not falling in the basket," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "The difference was that the team just hung in there and kept fighting."

A basket by McGrady to open the second half gave Orlando its largest lead at 46-36. Indiana battled back and went ahead, 58-57, on a free throw by Bruno Sundov with 2:25 to play. The Pacers led, 66-64, at the end of three quarters.

The Magic went on a 10-3 run to begin the fourth quarter, grabbing a 74-69 lead with just over eight minutes left. A 3-pointer by Armstrong made it 81-72 with 4:23 left and Indiana never got closer than six points thereafter.

"I liked this win because we did not have to put it on Tracy's shoulders," Rivers said. "Tracy had a deficient basketball game. I just thought he really kept trying to get the team involved and that was nice."

Pat Garrity scored nine points and Michael Doleac and rookie Mike Miller each contributed eight for the Magic, who shot 42 percent (35-of-83). Doleac tied a season high with nine rebounds and had a career-high four blocked shots.

Reggie Miller scored 18 points and Sundov, who was activated earlier in the day, had career highs with 17 points and nine rebounds. The Pacers failed to get their 3-point attack in gear as they missed all nine attempts from beyond the arc.

"He played great," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said of Sundov. "I thought he extended the defense and shot the ball well. The times that he was out there he did some really good things. I've liked what I've seen from him in practice the last couple of months."

Jalen Rose had 16 points on 8-of-21 shooting and Jermaine O'Neal had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

"It really doesn't matter about getting them (double-doubles) when you don't win," O'Neal said. "They got a ton of second-chance opportunities and scored on a lot of them. We are not finishing games of late."

Thomas went with a larger lineup featuring Sundov for most of the game as Travis Best was limited to nine points in 19 minutes of action. Sundov took the starting spot of Sam Perkins, who is out with a sprained neck.

"I don't think it (lineup change) made that big a difference," Thomas said. "I think we have to find some easier ways to manufacture points -- free throw and fast-break opportunities. We're not getting enough of those right now."

Indiana, which shot 42.5 percent (37-of-87), has lost three in a row for the first time since December 20-23.

The teams have split two meetings this season. The Pacers won, 103-93, on Christmas.
