Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored 12 of his 30 points in an explosive fourth quarter as the Detroit Pistons rolled to a 112-103 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

The Pistons scored 37 points in final period, including 30 in the last eight minutes, to hand the Nets their sixth straight loss.

Stackhouse was 3-of-5 from the floor in the fourth quarter and committed just one of his career-high 10 turnovers in the final 12 minutes.

"They forced the ball out of my hands most of the game and I still was able to get my points and assists," Stackhouse said. "Sometimes not-so-good teams make you play not so good."

New Jersey had an 84-82 lead with 7:31 to play before Detroit responded with an 10-2 run to take a 94-86 lead with 4:01 to go.

The Nets pulled within three when Keith Van Horn hit a 3-pointer with 2:46 remaining, but Stackhouse answered with five straight points for a 101-93 lead. Dana Barros made 6-of-6 free throws and Stackhouse was 5-of-6 from the line in the final two minutes to put away the game for the Pistons, who finished a 2-2 road trip.

"Hopefully this will give us a little confidence because we've given away plenty of games, " Barros said.

The Pistons took their first lead of the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Barros that made in 80-78 with 10:45 remaining. Johnny Newman made a technical foul shot and Lucious Harris drained a 19-foot jumper to give the Nets back the lead, 82-80.

Mikki Moore slammed an alley-oop from Barros and, after a jumper by Stephen Jackson, dunked off a feed from John Wallace to tie the game.

Jerome Williams was fouled while making a short turnaround jumper and hit the free throw to give Detroit the lead for good at 87-84 with 5:49 left.

Barros had 17 points and eight assists and Williams added 15 points and 17 rebounds for Detroit.

"I'm one of the top rebounders in the game per minute," Williams said. "If you don't box me out I'm going to get the rebound."

Ben Wallace scored just three points but had 14 rebounds and tied a season-high with six blocks. Jud Buechler scored 10 points in 14 minutes off the bench and shot 4-of-7 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from downtown.

"(Williams), Jud Buechler and Dana Barros -- those are the guys that really won the game for us," Stackhouse said.

The Pistons held a 58-32 rebounding advantage and grabbed 21 on the offensive glass to offset 22 turnovers.

"They outhustled us on the boards," Newman said. "Offensive rebounds killed us. You cant keep giving them two or three opportunities."

"All season long has been a reounding debt and again that was our Achilles' heel," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "With those type of rebounds and those type of numbers it's very difficult to win in this league."

Newman scored 21 points off the bench before fouling out with 41 seconds left. Van Horn finished with 19 points on 5-of-17 shooting and Stephon Marbury added 18 but was only 5-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-14 from the line.

"We have to get better," Marbury said. "Right now we're not playing good basketball. We're not doing the things to win ballgames."

Nets rookie Kenyon Martin was ejected with 5:10 remaining the second quarter and New Jersey leading, 41-34.

Van Horn scored five points during a 12-4 run that gave New Jersey a 25-18 lead late in the first quarter. The Nets had a 10-point lead after one period and built their largest lead at 36-22 on an alley-oop dunk by Martin with 9:21 left in the first half.

The Pistons outscored New Jersey, 25-8, in the final five minutes of the first half and took a 56-49 lead at halftime. Stackhouse scored six points and Barros drained two shots from the arc during the run.
