Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- After being named to the All-Star team earlier in the day, Dikembe Mutombo showed the offensive side to his game and spoiled the return of his former coach to Atlanta.

Mutombo posted season highs with 21 points and 29 rebounds and Jason Terry added 16 points as the Hawks took advantage of All-Star Vince Carter's absence for a 102-97 victory over coach Lenny Wilkens and the Toronto Raptors.

Mutombo, one of the top defenders in the NBA, had a typically strong defensive game, blocking six shots as Atlanta improved to 18-3 all-time against Toronto. The 7-2 center played 41 minutes, making 8-of-12 shots from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line.

"An unbelievable effort from Dikembe," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "Several guys played well, we had good balance. That's what we need to win ballgames."

Mutombo and New York Knicks guard Latrell Sprewell were named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team by NBA commissioner David Stern as injury replacements for Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning and Orlando Magic forward Grant Hill.

"I was just feeling well," Mutombo said. "I was feeling strong. I knew that we've been struggling. For some reason, I felt tonight was the night. When you get 20 or 25 boards, you want to win that game. It's a great accomplishment. I'm glad we played so well today. We've been struggling at home."

Carter, voted by the fans to start in the All-Star Game, stayed in Toronto for diagnostic testing on a strained left knee aggravated in Tuesday's 96-89 victory over Philadelphia.

The Raptors arrived in Atlanta at 4 a.m. EST Wednesday and four hours later were chased out of their hotel rooms due to a fire. They appeared fatigued and shot just 42 percent (37-of-89).

Rookie Morris Peterson scored 20 points and Dell Curry added 18 off the bench before he was ejected for his second technical foul with 56 seconds left.

"We came in late last night and we had a fire alarm at 8:00. We had to get out of our beds," Peterson said. "It was a tough game after a big emotional win last night."

Wilkens, the NBA's all-time coaching wins leader, compiled a 310-232 record in seven seasons with Atlanta. His only losing campaign came last season, when the Hawks slumped to a 28-54 mark.

"The first time around it's always strange, it's an adjustment," Wilkens said of his return. "It's a business, but you still have a lot of friends and good relations. You have to move on and that's how it is."

Antonio Davis did not appear to be affected by lack of sleep as the Raptors starting center collected 15 points and 15 rebounds. Alvin Williams, starting in place of Carter, hit 7-of-11 shots and finished with 17 points.

"It was a good challenge for us. If we want to get to the next level, these are obstacles we're going to have to overcome," Davis said. "The good teams, that's what they do. They get the job done."

Toronto forward Charles Oakley did look tired as the forward missed all seven of shots from the floor.

Mutombo scored 11 points and Alan Henderson added 10 of his 16 in the first half, when when the Hawks shot 51 percent (24-of-47) and took a 58-46 lead into the locker room.

The Hawks maintained a double-digit margin until Williams hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left in the third to pull the Raptors within 78-71.

Tony Smith opened the fourth quarter with a 19-footer and Lorenzen Wright made a layup to push Atlanta's lead to 82-71 with just under 11 minutes to go.

Peterson scored six points in a 10-2 surge, cutting Atlanta's lead to 84-81 when he made a layup with 7:20 left. Mutombo made two free throws with 6:59 remaining before Keon Clark made 1-of-2 to close the deficit to 86-82 with 6:43 left.

Peterson's layup closed the margin to 86-84 with 6:12 left, but Dion Glover answered with an 11-footer 28 seconds later.

Toronto closed within two points for the final time with 5:08 remaining when Corliss Williamson hit a layup. After grabbing a rebound, Henderson made a pair of free throws to give Atlanta a 90-86 edge with 4:42 left.
