Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- While making the playoffs for the first time since 1990 is the ultimate goal for the Dallas Mavericks, finally beating Pat Riley and the Miami Heat had to feel awfully good.

All-Star Michael Finley scored 26 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime, as Dallas snapped a 26-game drought against Riley-coached teams and a 16-game losing streak to the Heat with a rousing 95-91 victory.

Finley had a chance to win it in regulation but misfired on a 20-footer at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime tied at 87-87. But the 6-7 swingman opened the scoring in the extra session, drilling a 25-footer just under a minute in to give Dallas the lead for good.

Dirk Nowitzki added a basket and Howard Eisley all but sealed Dallas' first win over Miami since December 10, 1991, when the Mavericks also won in overtime, with a 3-pointer from the right sideline to make it 95-89 with 1:29 to play.

"Miami is a tough team," Nowitzki said. "We have a great team, a playoff team. We just can't have any letdowns because we are playing good right now. Maybe two years ago or last year we would have lost a game like this tonight. Now we are confident down the stretch and that says a lot about our team."

Eisley scored 17 points for the Mavericks, who beat Riley for the first time since he manned the sidelines for the Los Angeles Lakers on March 12, 1988. Riley's Lakers won the NBA championship that season.

"Obviously, we're real thrilled with getting the victory," Dallas coach Donn Nelson said. "I thought our execution was pretty darn good for three quarters. We got a little bit sloppy in the fourth, but their defense will do that to you."

All-Star Anthony Mason scored 23 points and Tim Hardaway added 21 for Miami, which had its five-game winning streak snapped and lost in Dallas for the first time in eight visits.

"When Finley made that three it really hurt us," Hardaway admitted. "In overtime, the first basket. It's tough because you know you made them miss some shots that they normally make and that three really hurt us."

The Mavs appeared to have matters settled when Eisley sank a 17-footer to give Dallas a comfortable 81-67 lead with 9:17 to play. But the Heat came roaring back while Dallas went stone cold from the floor.

Hardaway connected from 21 and 24 feet before burying his second straight 3-pointer to shave the deficit to 81-75 with 7:21 remaining, raising a reasonable doubt that the Mavs would be able to snap their skids against Riley and the Heat.

"Tim Hardaway got hot in the fourth quarter and he was making some real good shots and they stepped up their defense," Mavs guard Hubert Davis said.

After a timeout by Dallas, Hardaway went right back to work, drilling another 3-pointer and a four-footer before Finley's 19-footer gave Dallas an 87-80 lead with 3:29 left.

Brian Grant, Anthony Carter and Bruce Bowen combined to make four free throws and Carter's five-footer drew the Heat within 87-86 with 33 seconds remaining.

Eddie Jones made 1-of-2 from the line with 11 seconds left to knot the contest before Finley missed his potential winning jumper with Bowen in his face.

Christian Laettner scored 13 points and Nowitzki and Gary Trent added 10 apiece for Dallas, which lost point guard Steve Nash to a pulled hamstring in the first half.

"Steve Nash had a little hot spot in his hamstring and we didn't want to push it," Nelson said.

The Mavericks shot 44 percent (40-of-91) and held a 51-47 rebounding edge while committing just nine turnovers.

Bowen scored 14 points and Jones 13 for Miami, which shot 40 percent (33-of-82) and outscored Dallas, 18-11, from the line.
