Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone made history again and Donyell Marshall outscored him again.

Malone became the sixth player in NBA history to amass 26,000 points and 13,000 rebounds but it was Marshall who led the Utah Jazz to an 87-76 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Less than three minutes into the game, Malone grabbed his 13,000th career rebound. On Tuesday, he became the second player to surpass the 32,000-point mark, scoring 25 to go with nine rebounds and seven assists in one of his best all-around performances this season.

"When you're still playing the game, you don't think about it tha much," Malone said of the recent rash of milestones. "I think when I'm done and I walk away, I'll look back and say, `Gosh, that was pretty awesome.' But right now, I really don't have time to think about it."

Malone, who has led Utah in scoring with great regularity during his brilliant 16-year career, has received a helping hand of late from Marshall, who led the Jazz for the third time in six games and the seventh time this season.

Malone finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and longtime teammate John Stockton added 11 points and nine assists.

With Utah clinging to a 54-51 lead, another new addition to the Jazz roster, John Starks, helped put away the game. Starks scored seven of his nine points during a 14-7 burst and Utah opened a 68-58 lead when the shooting guard buried the second of two free throws with 1:53 remaining in the period.

"I thought we did a great job of coming out of halftime and forcing the issue," Starks said. "That's what you have to do against a solid ballclub like the Charlotte Hornets. You have to come in, and like I said, it's who is going to hit who first and I think we did a good job of hitting them first."

"The guys on the bench came in during the second quarter and sparked us a little bit," Marshall said. "You know, sometimes that's what you need. You need the bench to spark it up for you or help you keep it going."

The Jazz have won 10 of 12 games since a five-game losing streak and Marshall has led them in scoring four times during that stretch, with each game resulting in a win.

David Wesley scored 15 points and Elden Campbell added 14 for Charlotte, which has dropped seven of its last nine games.

Jamal Mashburn, the Hornets' leading scorer, enduring a miserable night, misfired on 14-of-18 shots and finishing with 13 points.

Baron Davis added 11 opints for Charlotte, which shot 40 percent (28-of-70) and held a 47-41 rebounding advantage.

"We just couldn't find a way to put the ball in the basket," Wesley said. "Defense was there, we held them to 87 points and that's enough to win."

The Hornets yielded 24 points off turnovers while picking up just nine points off Utah giveaways.

"We turned the ball over and made too many mistakes and they capitalized on it," Mashburn said. "I mean that's a veteran club and that's what veteran clubs do. They did it well tonight and if we can learn from them tonight, we'll improve a whole lot. They just played solid."

Olden Polynice scored 10 points for the Jazz, who shot 41 percent (34-of-83) and outscored the Hornets, 26-19, in the second period to take the lead for good.

Trailing 22-15 after one quarter, Utah got even in a hurry. Malone capped a 12-3 spurt with two free throws as the Jazz forged ahead, 27-25, with 6:20 left in the first half.

Campbell answered with two free throws and a layup but Malone made two of his own from the line and a 20-footer to spark a 16-9 run to close the period. Marhsall dunked with two seconds left in the half, giving Utah a 44-38 lead at intermission.
