Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber scored 41 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Sacramento Kings took care of business early and posted a 105-95 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

The Kings jumped out early and led by as many as 29 points in the second quarter. But what appeared to be an easy victory almost turned into a nightmare as the woeful Grizzlies came back and got within 10 points with just under three minutes to play.

"It's nice to get a win, a good first half and I don't know what happened the second half but it's still a good to get a win," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "We just didn't finish the game the way we would have like to have finished it.

Webber, Vlade Divac and Peja Stojakovic each had a pair of baskets as Sacramento opened the game with a 12-2 run. Doug Christie's three-point play closed the scoring in the first period and gave the Kings a 31-15 advantage.

After Vancouver scored the first three points of the second quarter, Jon Barry's 3-pointer capped a 10-0 run that made it 41-18 with 8:40 left.

Another 3-pointer by Barry with just under four minutes left in the period gave the Kings their largest lead at 54-25. Sacramento led 63-36 at halftime.

Sacramento held a 92-67 lead with 8:37 remaining before Vancouver staged a furious rally. A 16-1 run capped by a basket by Shareef Abdur-Rahim cut the deficit to 93-83 with 2:49 to play. But Webber answered with a three-point play to help stem the late charge.

"We didn't finish the game, we need to come more mentally prepared," Webber said. "It's not the way we should play if we have bigger goals. It's about attitude, everyone wonders what I mean and that's part of what I mean. You can't feel sorry for a team, nobody felt sorry for Sacramento before we got here."

Webber made 15-of-23 shots and 10-of-11 free throws for his second-highest scoring game of the season, falling short of his 51 points in an overtime loss to Indiana on January 5.

"Webber is just outstanding," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "He's a monster, he's just a monster. He took over and hit some big shots and hit his free throws when he had to."

Stojakovic had 17 points and Divac 13 for Sacramento, which shot 48 percent (37-of-77).

The Kings now embark on a season-high five-game road trip against playoff teams beginning on Sunday against the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers.

"It's going to be a real tough road trip...the schedule that we have, it's the first time I've started a road trip in LA, so it's going to be interesting starting in LA, Milwaukee, Minnesota then Portland and Utah," Adelman said. "They may as well throw Philadelphia in there, it's going to be a test for us. We're going to have to go out there and play at a high level to get a win."

Abdur-Rahim led Vancouver with 27 points and nine rebounds. Mike Bibby had 23 points with eight assists for the Grizzlies, who have lost nine of their last 10 games.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf made 7-of-10 shots for 14 points, including 10 during Vancouver's fourth-quarter comeback.

Erick Strickland, recently acquired for Othella Harrington in a trade with the New York Knicks, had three points in 13 minutes of action.

"There's been some talk of some trades and obviously we made the one but the guys are still pretty positive," Lowe said. "I think that one it was an eye-opener to see that there are some trades going on out here and regardless of who you are if you say you're not happy and you want to be traded, once reality sets in you think about it a little bit."

The Grizzlies were outrebounded, 48-40.
