Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant continued to carry the offense with Shaquille O'Neal sidelined, scoring 44 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 93-87 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Bryant shot 15-of-30 from the field and 14-of-14 from the line to notch 40 or more points for the second time in his last three games and the sixth time this season. He tied a career high with five blocks and grabbed nine rebounds.

"I got lots of easy baskets," said Bryant, who was feeling soreness in his shooting shoulder. "I started feeling OK after I got warmed up. A lot of the shots I had to take, the shot clock was low with five, six, or seven seconds, I just tried to create something."

"I thought he played a really fine game," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "There were some points in the game where he was trying his damndest to score. Some of them were successful and some of them weren't, but he did bring some energy and helped us get over the edge. His defense, I thought, was very good."

O'Neal watched courtside with an ailing right foot and most of his teammates watched on the court as Bryant did most of the scoring. No other Lakers player had more than nine points.

Rick Fox contributed nine points and Isaiah Rider added eight for the Lakers, who improved to 2-2 since O'Neal went down. The All-Star center is set to miss at least a week, including Sunday afternoon's crucial encounter with Sacramento.

"Forty-four points doesn't make up for he and Shaq, but it adds to Shaq not being there," Fox said. "He was aggressive and when he draws attention like he does from opponents the rest of us need to make plays too."

O'Neal's replacement, Greg Foster, had four points and three rebounds in 16 minutes.

Jamal Mashburn scored 28 points and David Wesley chipped in 18 for the Hornets, who have lost eight of their last 10 games. They fell to 1-2 on their four-game road trip.

"We didn't take advantage as we should have," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "They were double-teaming Jamal Mashburn. We had our chances. We just missed shots. Mash has been on a role lately. He's playing very well. He's our leading scorer. He has to score in order for us to be good. He certainly did tonight and he really gave us a change to win."

The game was tight throughout as neither team led by more than seven points. The Lakers took the lead for good with 3:55 remaining on Fox's driving dunk. Fox added a reverse layup 47 seconds later for an 86-83 advantage.

Mashburn followed with a turnaround jumper to cut Charlotte's deficit to one point but Brian Shawn made a driving layup and Bryant hit a turnaround jumper to push Los Angeles' lead to 90-85 with 1:27 left.

"We didn't play well defensively," said Charlotte guard and Los Angeles native Baron Davis, who had nine points and nine rebounds. "We gambled on a lot of plays. We gave up too many easy baskets in transition. Kobe did pretty much anything he wanted to do tonight. We had opportunities to win the ballgame, but in the end we just couldn't finish."

The fourth quarter featured six lead changes and two ties.

The Lakers defeated Charlotte for the sixth consecutive time, and are 10-4 in their last 14 encounters vs. the Hornets at home.

Los Angeles owned a 56-49 lead with 55 seconds left in second quarter when Bryant converted two free throws. But the Hornets went on an 11-1 spurt spaning the two halves to go ahead, 60-57, with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter.

After Mashburn's jumper gave Charlotte a 66-61 with 6:32 left in the third quarter, the Lakers went on a 12-2 run to take a five-point lead on a layup by Bryant with 1:04 remaining in the period.

Robert Horry scored eight points and Horace Grant had six and six rebounds for Los Angeles, which shot 46 percent (36-for-78) from the field and outscored Charlotte, 34-20, in the paint.

Elden Campbell had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 34 percent (31-for-90).

"It's tough to beat any team when you're shooting 34 percent," Silas said. "They shot 46 and I thought that was pretty much the game. I thought we were in the game all the way to the end. They executed. We didn't and that was the ball game."
