Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers must have felt like Jerry Stackhouse in overtime.

Overcoming a horrible shooting night by their All-Star guard, the Detroit Pistons held the Cavaliers to two points in the extra session en route to an 88-81 victory.

One night after scoring 40 points in a game for the fifth time this season, Stackhouse could not find the basket against the Cavaliers, making just 7-of-34 shots from the field. The NBA's second-leading scorer finished with 21 points.

"I don't think I ever had a bad shooting night like tonight. It's just one of those games," Stackhouse said. "The Cavs didn't do anything differently in defensing me than they did last time I was here.

"The guys were looking for me and I kept thinking the next one would go in. Unfortunately, it didn't. I am just glad to get that one out of the way. The whole game I kept telling myself, `We will win this game.'"

In overtime, the Cavaliers shot like Stackhouse as they made just 1-of-9 from the field and were outscored, 9-2.

Dana Barros picked up the slack for Stackhouse, scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter. His only points of the extra session came on a jumper with 83 seconds left that gave Detroit an 84-81 advantage.

"We have got to do that every game. Nobody has to do it solo," Barros said. "We have all got to be more confident, step up, make big shots, and try to take the pressure off of Jerry."

Joe Smith scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Pistons, who improved to 2-1 vs. the Cavaliers this season.

Rookie Chris Mihm had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland, which suffered its fifth straight loss.

It looked as though the contest would not need an extra session after Barros, who finished with 17 points, made two free throws with 23 seconds left to give Detroit a 78-75 lead.

Seven seconds later, Chucky Brown drilled a 16-footer for Cleveland and, after Stackhouse made 1-of-2 from the line, Andre Miller hit a leaner with 4.6 seconds to play to tie.

Following a timeout, the Pistons went to Stackhouse, who could not deliver as he threw up an airball from just above the free-throw line. Stackhouse complained that that his arm was hit by Jim Jackson on the play.

Both teams struggled in overtime. Ben Wallace's dunk off another airball by Stackhouse with 2:40 remaining was the first basket by either team and gave the Pistons an 82-79 advantage.

The Cavaliers missed their first five shots before Cedric Henderson made a jumper with 1:38 left, cutting the deficit to 82-81.

Barros, who scored 16 points in an earlier win over Cleveland this season, provided the dagger with a jumper from the right sideline 15 seconds later and Smith had a dunk with 38 seconds remaining, giving the Pistons an 86-81 cushion.

"Barros has a lot of experience," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "I know, because I have seen him do it against teams I have been with. He will make big shots and make the big plays."

"We stopped the main guys but we have got to stop everybody else," Henderson said. "That's what happened, everyone else came in and beat us."

Despite playing Friday, the Pistons came out looking like the fresher team and built a 28-17 lead after one quarter. They led 48-39 at the half behind 12 points each from Stackhouse and Chucky Atkins.

Atkins finished with 12 points and Wallace grabbed 14 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 38 percent (35-of-93).

Detroit still held a 56-44 lead with eight minutes left in the third quarter following a 20-footer by Smith. But Cleveland answered by scoring the next 12 points, capped by Mihm's follow shot to tie it with 3:14 left in the period.

Miller added 14 points for the Cavs, who shot just 39 percent (34-of-87).
