Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Sean Rooks made two free throws with 20 seconds left as the Los Angeles Clippers rallied from a double-digit deficit before holding on for a 90-89 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Los Angeles, which trailed by 10 points in the second quarter, held an 85-78 advantage with 4:45 left on a basket by Derek Strong.

However, the Trail Blazers made a last-ditch effort for their fourth straight win over the Clippers with an 11-3 run. Steve Smith's jumper gave Portland an 89-88 advantage with 29 remaining.

Arvydas Sabonis fouled Rooks on the other end and the veteran center made both free throws to give Los Angeles a 90-89 lead.

After a timeout, Portland's Damon Stoudamire missed a long jumper. He was off the mark on another jump shot with 2.9 seconds left before the ball went out of bounds off Los Angeles. Dale Davis tried yet another jumper and he and Steve Smith tried to put in the rebound but missed as time ran out.

"We had some good looks at the end of the game to win it but it just didn't happen for us tonight," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We had some options with Damon and a few other guys. Damon had a good look but it just didn't fall."

"We let this game get away from us. We didn't play disciplined enough to finish them off. It would have been good to get this win, but give credit to the Clippers because they stayed disciplined, came back and got the win."

Eric Piatkowski scored 26 points and Lamar Odom added 18 and six assists for the Clippers, who won consecutive games for only the third time this season. They defeated Portland at home for the first time since April 8, 1996.

"It's been a long time since we beat them here," said Piatkowski, who was 11-for-16 from the floor. "I know the last time we beat them was up there. It was big and we had that little skid there where we lost eight, nine games in a row. I was getting down a little bit down. To come back and get a win against these guys after that San Antonio loss (on Wednesday) is really big for us."

Bonzi Wells scored 22 points while Stoudamire and Smith each contributed 15 for the Blazers, who suffered only their fifth loss in 22 games. They had won 13 of their last 14 meetings with Los Angeles.

"Damon got a good look at the end and when it came off we fumbled the tip," Smith said. "In this league they all can't go in the basket but we took our chances and had a good shot to win it."

Portland played without leading scorer and rebounder Rasheed Wallace. The hot-tempered All-Star forward was suspended without pay for two games and fined $10,000 by the NBA on Friday for throwing a towel at an official during Thursday's victory over Phoenix.

Detlef Schrempf's hook shot gave Portland a 48-38 lead with 2:09 left in the first half. But the Clippers chipped away in the third quarter and started the fourth with a 10-2 run. Piatkowski's running jumper capped the spurt and gave Los Angeles an 83-76 advantage with 5:42 remaining.

Jeff McInnis collected 17 points and seven assists and Rooks finished with eight points and five rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 47 percent (37-for-79) from the field.

"We felt we could win," McInnis said. "Without Rasheed we thought we had a chance to do something. We just kept playing hard. The game is 48 minutes. You know you have to play every moment you're out there. We knew also that we had to play defense. That's the main thing with this team. As our defense goes, so goes our team."

Davis had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Sabonis chipped in with 12 and six for Portland, which shot 49 percent (37-for-75).
