Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady scored 11 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as the Orlando Magic dominated the final 12 minutes of a 96-84 triumph over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Magic showed they still had some legs just 24 hours after knocking off the Philadelphia 76ers in double overtime Friday. Orlando took a 70-68 lead into the final quarter and opened the period with a 10-2 run.

Darrell Armstrong, who scored 22 points after a huge game vs. the 76ers, ignited the run with a basket off a feed from McGrady. Troy Hudson had three free throws in the spurt, including converting a pair following separate technical fouls.

McGrady had a career-high 15 rebounds, five assists and five steals and Armstrong swept 10 boards for the Magic, who held a 56-48 rebounding edge.

"They're two very good players, playing very good basketball," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "It's not a surprise that they played so well."

Despite shooting just 36 percent (33-of-91) from the field, Orlando (23-23) posted its fourth straight win to get back to .500 for the first time since November 12, when it was 4-4.

"This is a big win for us," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "It gets us to that .500 number and now we want more. If we can stay above that number, obviously that means good things for us at the end of the year. We do understand that. It's been a climb. There were stretches where .500 looked a long way away."

Jason Terry scored 22 points, Lorenzen Wright added 20 and Dikembe Mutombo 11, 15 rebounds and six blocks for Atlanta, which has lost eight of its last 10 games.

The Hawks were within 74-70 when they were whistled for illegal defense with 9:41 remaining and Hudson made the free throw. On the ensuing possession, Alan Henderson was called for a foul, argued and was hit with a technical foul. Hudson made that free throw for a 76-70 cushion and Pat Garrity hit a 3-pointer with 9:15 left.

Hudson's third free throw capped the spurt and made it 80-70 with 8:50 to go. Atlanta never got closer than seven the rest of the way and trailed 92-77 following a 3-pointer by rookie Mike Miller with 3:41 remaining.

"I think we started concentrating too much on what the referees were calling and we lost our composure," Wright said. "We stopped playing hard and working."

"I was a little fatigued but I don't have to do the things that I used to do, I don't have as much (responsibility) on offense because we're getting so much production from other players," McGrady said. "My thing is to rebound, defend and just get my teammates involved."

The Magic made 6-of-14 shots and took advantage of six Atlanta turnovers in the final period.

"It is really frustrating because we executed the game plan for three quarters and we didn't finish it," said Hawks point guard Brevin Knight, who fouled out midway through the final quarter. "I needed to be out there and it is especially frustrating."

Terry scored seven points in the first quarter as Atlanta held a 25-21 lead after 12 minutes. Wright had eight in the second quarter as the Hawks pushed their lead to 51-43.

Atlanta still held a 59-52 lead with 8:32 to go in the third quarter before Miller buried a 3-pointer and Armstrong hit a 17-footer and 3-pointer 24 seconds apart to give Orlando a one-point edge.

"We started knocking down shots, our thing was all about knocking down shots," Armstrong said.
