Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Wins have not been easy to come by for the Vancouver Grizzlies this season but they are becoming a rare occurrence for the Chicago Bulls.

The Grizzlies held off a late run by the desperate Bulls and handed them their franchise-record 14th consecutive loss, 91-84.

"Same old, same old, it's frustrating," Bulls' guard Ron Mercer said. "We have been playing our best basketball over our last 14 games. It is just another loss."

Chicago's previous franchise record of 13 consecutive losses was established from October 26-December 4, 1976. The Bulls also have lost 12 in a row on the road, with the last win coming at Boston on December 13.

The Bulls made a frantic attempt at a fourth-quarter comeback but was 0-of-5 in the final 30 seconds and Vancouver made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

"We've been falling short in the challenge area all year and I think we stepped up today," Vancouver forward Tony Massenberg said. "We had an attitude that we were just not going to lose this game and that's something we hope will carry over for the rest of the season."

Vancouver's Mike Bibby scored 15 of his 26 points in the second half and dished out nine assists. Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Grant Long chipped in 12 points for the Grizzlies, who improved to 9-6 against the Eastern Conference and 6-3 against Central Division opponents.

The Grizzlies led 74-65 with nine minutes to go when the Bulls scored six straight points to pull within three with six minutes remaining. Bibby responded with two jump shots to spark an 11-4 run that gave Vancouver its biggest fourth-quarter lead, 85-75, with 2:50 left.

"I thought Mike (Bibby) played great, very aggressive," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "One of his best games in terms of being aggressive."

"A lot of shots were dropping," Bibby said. "I give my team credit for giving me the ball in the right spot. I've knocked down a good percentage of them and hopefully I can continue."

Rookie Marcus Fizer scored seven of his career-high 26 points in a 9-3 spurt that pulled the Bulls within 88-84 with 37 seconds to go.

"We didnt play 48 minutes smart, but we played 48 minutes hard," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe "When you have a team down like that you have to bury them and continue to do the things that were working."

After shooting better than 50 percent from 3-point range in their last two games, the Bulls shot 1-of-19 from beyond the arc, including four misses in the final 20 seconds.

"It's a difficult percentage," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "The bottom line was we wound up taking too many perimeter shots."

Fizer came off the bench to make 10-of-14 shots and all six of his free throws. Mercer added 17 points on just 7-of-22 shooting and Elton Brand posted his 23rd double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Bryce Drew chipped in 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting for Chicago, which has lost three straight meetings with Vancouver.

"We thought if we played well and shot well we would have a chance to catch them," Bibby said. "That didn't happen, somehow we have to regroup and get one here before All-Star break."

Vancouver opened the third quarter on an 8-1 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Abdur-Rahim, to take a 49-39 lead with 10:08 left in the period. Two free throws by Mercer brought the Bulls within 56-54 but Chicago could not get closer and the Grizzlies held a 67-62 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Bulls held their only lead, 37-35, with 2:12 left in the second quarter. But Vancouver closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 41-37 lead at halftime.
