Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Even without starters Gary Payton and Ruben Patterson, the Seattle SuperSonics could not lose at home to the road-weary Vancouver Grizzlies.

Vin Baker and Shammond Williams scored 17 points apiece off the bench as the SuperSonics improved to 11-0 all-time at home against the Grizzlies and handed Vancouver its 15th straight road loss, 95-82.

The Grizzlies have not won away from GM Place since November 26 at Boston and fell to 3-19 on the road for the season. Only the Chicago Bulls (2-24) have a worse road record.

With Payton nursing an abdominal strain and Patterson serving a league-imposed suspension stemming from his guilty plea to a misdemeanor assualt charge, Williams and Baker did the job.

"Vin played well and we really got some good play off the bench, which is exactly what we needed to play without Gary and Ruben," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "You need guys to come off the bench and step up and play."

Williams buried 6-of-13 shots, including a 3-pointer that put the Grizzlies away with less than a minute remaining, and handed out eight assists while backing up starting point guard Emanual Davis. Baker, who lost his starting spot to Patterson earlier this season, went 8-of-13 from the floor in 28 minutes.

"Baker went off on us and played well," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said of Baker's personal nine-point run in the final period. "He just took over the ballgame basically, we couldn't defend him. Anytime a team is missing players of that magnitude, you want to try to take advantage of them because you don't get those type of opportunities that often."

Mike Bibby scored 23 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 21 for Vancouver.

Michael Dickerson scored 16 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 46 percent (32-of-70), were outrebounded, 41-37 and yielded 23 points off turnovers. Vancouver has lost 20 of 23 all-time meetings with Seattle, including three of four encounters this season.

"We had an opportunity tonight and we didn't take advantage of it," Dickerson said. "That's the way it is. Their guys stepped up."

Rashard Lewis scored 14 points and Brent Barry and rookie Desmond Mason added 13 apiece for Seattle, which shot 47 percent (39-of-82) and outscored the Grizzlies, 46-28, in the paint.

"Everybody had to play, everybody had to contribute," Mason said. "We had to play solid defense because they have a bunch of offensive threats. Everybody knows that (Payton and Patterson) are the key to our offense."

Baker snapped a 71-71 tie with a three-point play, putting Seattle ahead to stay with 7:22 to play. He scored the Sonics' next seven points, stretching the advantage to 80-73 with 4:55 remaining.

"It was an ugly game there for a while," Barry said. "And you know we just needed a little bit of a jolt to get going and Vin did a great job sparking us in the fourth and then Shammond came in and played some big minutes for us tonight."

Abdur-Rahim hit a seven-footer, Bryant Reeves made a free throw and Bibby drilled a 19-footer to shave the deficit to 80-78 with 2:36 left. But Mason answered with a jumper and Barry added a basket to make it a six-point lead with 1:55 remaining.

Abdur-Rahim and Lewis exchanged baskets and Abdur-Rahim hit a seven-footer before Williams put the game out of reach with a 23-footer, giving Seattle an 89-82 cushion with 46 seconds left.
