Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- For the first 30 minutes it was hard to tell which team was hot and which team was struggling. Then Dirk Nowitzki stepped up for the Dallas Mavericks.

Nowitzki scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half as the Mavericks erased a 14-point third quarter deficit and defeated the struggling Atlanta Hawks, 91-81.

Howard Eisley continued his strong play of late with 22 points and All-Star Michael Finley added 15 for Dallas, which won for the seventh time in nine games.

"These guys are putting many gray hairs on my head," Donn Nelson said. "We're capable of losing to any team and beating any team in the league."

Atlanta had a 62-48 lead with 6:38 left in the third quarter when Dallas closed the game with a 43-19 run. Michael Finley sparked the burst with a dunk and Eisley hit back-to-back 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter to give the Mavericks a 68-66 lead heading into the final 12 minutes.

Jason Terry scored 19 points and Alan Henderson had 12 and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost seven of nine. Atlanta did get 21 rebounds from All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo.

"In the third quarter, they made shots," Hawks coach Lon Kruger. "We have to do more to step up there and contest those shots. Nowitzki and Finley really took over when they needed to. That's what good players do."

Nowitzki was bypassed for the All-Star Game this weekend in Washington despite being one of just seven players in the league to be in the top 20 in both scoring and rebounding.

He made just 3-of-7 shots and had only seven points after 24 minutes.

But Nowitzki and his teammates heated up midway through the third quarter and were able to erase a 14-point deficit with solid defense and strong outside shooting. After Finley's dunk got Dallas within 62-50, Nowitzki and Shawn Bradley sank consecutive jumpers.

Mutombo had a dunk and a layup around a 12-footer by Nowitzki but a short hook by Bradley with 2:24 left in the quarter pulled Dallas within 66-58. Nowitzki followed with a layup and a jumper before Eisley sank 3-pointers 34 seconds apart to put the Mavericks ahead for good, 68-66.

Nowitzki was 6-of-6 in the quarter as Dallas made 14-of-21 shots in the period.

"We came out and started defending better," Nowitzki said. "We knew we could get back in this game. Everybody started making shots, it wasn't just me."

"The game went back and forth in the third," Henderson said. "I think with about five minutes to go (in the third), we had about a 12-point lead. By the end of the quarter, we were down two. They started hitting shots and we stopped executing. We started standing around and it didn't work for us."

Bradley opened the fourth quarter with a 14-footer and Greg Buckner's basket 63 seconds into the period put Dallas on top, 72-66. Brevin Knight made a free throw for Atlanta but Eisley sank a 17-footer and Buckner drained a 3-pointer to push the lead to double digits.

"We didn't come out with the intensity we needed in the first half," Finley said. "We took this team for granted. We had to check ourselves at halftime. We were down but we always knew we were in the game. We've had success being down and winning ballgames."

Dallas shot 46 percent (36-of-78) while the Hawks made just 37 percent (32-of-86) of their shots. Atlanta also made just 14-of-22 free throws.

"In the second half, we decided to play some defense and guard people," Nelson added. "I didn't have to say anything at halftime."

"We did a good job in the second half defending," Eisley said. "We were really committed to stepping up our defense."

The Mavericks have won four straight meetings in the series. Dallas also improved to 31-18 after recording 40 wins in 1999-2000.
