Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Anthony Mason continues to show why his spot on the All-Star team is well-deserved.

Mason scored 10 of his season-high 29 points during a decisive third-quarter run to lead the Miami Heat to a 102-89 victory over the slumping Indiana Pacers.

"Ever since he was selected to the All-Star team he's been validated," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "All those thoughts he's had about himself and his play have been validated. I think he's even moved on to another level."

"He's an All-Star. He played like one," Indiana guard Jalen Rose said of Mason. "Here's a guy who can't jump. I don't know how fast he can run but he's a guy who comes and brings it every night."

With the game tied, 58-58, the Heat used a 26-10 run led by Mason and seven points from Tim Hardaway, opening an 84-68 lead in the final seconds of the third quarter.

Indiana climbed back within 95-87 with 3:15 remaining but Miami used a 7-0 run to thwart the Pacers' comeback hopes.

"The Heat made some easy shots on the inside and Mason went to work," Indiana guard Reggie Miller said. "Anytime you get down by ten points against a Pat Riley team it is tough to get back in it."

Miami shot 52 percent (41-of-79) from the floor, led by Mason, who made 11-of-20 shots. The Heat have scored over 100 points in five of the last nine games and are now 6-0 when they shoot better than 50 percent.

"We're breaking 100 points more often because we aren't taking so long to shoot the ball," Riley said. "Our whole game is quicker. Consistency will be critical to maintain and lock up a good seed."

Miami's Brian Grant had 19 points and eight rebounds and Hardaway finished with 13. A.C. Green added eight points and six rebounds off the bench for the Heat, who have won seven of their last nine games.

After missing two critical free throws in the final minutes of Miami's loss against the Knicks on Sunday, Jones redeemed himself with six of his 13 points in the key third-quarter run.

"We could have easily been 32-18 if I had some heroics," he said.

The Heat led, 91-77, with 7:59 left but Auston Croshere scored six points during a 10-4 run that brought the Pacers within nine before Miami was able to put away the game.

The game featured 10 ties and 17 lead changes before Miami took control in the third quarter. The Heat began their decisive run with seven straight points which began with a tip-in by Mason and ended with a jumper from Jones.

After a 3-pointer from Travis Best, Miami responded with six straight including a jumper from Jones, a layup by Mason and capped off by a dunk from Anthony Bowen.

The Pacers scored three straight points to close within seven, but the Heat scored 10 of the next 12 points. Hardaway hit two shots from beyond the arc during the burst.

Indiana shot 48 percent (36-of-75) but made just 11-of-20 from the line.

Indiana's Al Harrington scored 15 of his season-high 20 points in the first half but was thoroughly manhandled by Mason after intermission. Rose added 19 points and eight rebounds and Austin Croshere and Derrick McKey each scored 14 points off the bench for the Pacers.

Miller was held to just nine points on 3-of-10 shooting and Jermaine O'Neal was limited to one points and rebounds in 19 minutes as the Pacers lost for the sixth time in their last seven games.

"(O'Neal) has probably hit the wall and is going through a little drought," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "Hopefully, he can get his legs back underneath him and start playing better basketball."

Immediately after the game, Hardaway had to be restrained by teammates from going after Miller, who was trash-talking on his way off the floor.
