Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- If only Jason Kidd and Cliff Robinson could put their off-court problems behind them as quickly as their dismal first-half performances on Tuesday.

Kidd and Robinson combined for two points in the first half before exploding after intermission, lifting the Phoenix Suns to a 97-80 victory over the Chicago Bulls, who had their franchise-record losing streak stretched to 16 games.

Kidd, whose domestic dispute with wife Joumana gained national attention last month, did not score and managed just two assists in the opening 24 minutes.

Robinson was picked up for speeding and weaving in traffic Monday morning on his way home from a Scottsdale nightclub and was arrested for driving while intoxicated. The 6-10 forward also had marijuana in his car and was greeted by a smattering of boos by the fans at America West Arena before managing just two points in the first half.

"I really didn't let myself get worried about what was going to be taking place from the crowd standpoint," Robinson said. "It's their prerogative to cheer how they feel. I did something that I regret."

In the first quarter, Kidd, Robinson and the rest of the starting five drew the ire of Phoenix coach Scott Skiles, who was forced to put in his reserves with 5:46 remaining in the period.

"I had seen enough," Skiles said. "We were standing around, not defending, not taking care of the ball. I've seen too much of that this year. I will not hesitate to do what is necessary to bring some discipline into the way we play. When the ball goes up, the starters are going to play or they aren't going to play at all."

Chicago forged a 50-50 tie on Bryce Drew's 3-pointer early in the third quarter before Kidd and Robinson got back in their coach's good graces.

The duo combined to score 13 points during a 16-0 run as the Suns took command for good, opening a 66-50 lead when Kidd fed Robinson for a reverse layup with 5:16 remaining in the period.

"We finally came with some energy in the third quarter and I don't know what we held them to, but that's what Scott's been looking for," Kidd said.

Robinson finished with 18 points -- 13 in the third quarter -- and Kidd had eight and 11 assists for the Suns, who have won four of five.

Ron Artest scored 18 points and rookie Marcus Fizer added 16 and 13 rebounds for the Bulls, who were without starting power forward Elton Brand due to a hyperextended left elbow.

Chicago has not won a game since Brand beat the buzzer for a 98-96 victory over Washington on January 4. It has lost 14 in a row on the road and is 0-14 away from home against Western Conference foes.

"The effect of losing has affected us," Bulls guard Ron Mercer said. "We're losing. It's not one or two losses, it's however many it is. I've lost count of consecutive losses."

The Bulls were also without coach Tim Floyd, who was serving a one-game suspension for making contact with an official during a 102-82 loss at the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.

Shawn Marion scored 17 points, including five during an 11-0 Phoenix burst that stretched the margin to 78-57 with 44 seconds left in the third quarter.

"We had a strong speech at halftime," Marion said. "We had to come out and perform."

Rodney Rogers scored 15 points off the bench and Tony Delk and Tom Gugliotta added 11 points apiece for Phoenix, which shot 46 percent (40-of-87), held a 46-38 rebounding advantage and yielded just six points off turnovers.

The Suns scored 25 points off Chicago giveaways.

Ron Mercer scored 15 points and rookie Jamal Crawford added 10 for the Bulls, who shot 40 percent (29-of-72) and made just 12 baskets after intermission.

Robinson began the game's decisive burst with a seven-footer and Kidd made two free throws before rookie Jake Tsakalidis converted a three-point play to make it 57-50.

Kidd followed with a layup and added a 16-footer before feeding Robinson on the break for what resulted in a three-point play. Kidd and Robinson combined for another easy basket to cap the 16-0 run.

The Bulls got within 67-57 with 3:38 left in the third quarter before the Suns ran away again. Kidd made a layup and fed Marion for two straight baskets before Marion made a free throw and Robinson and Delk drained jumpers to make it 78-57 with under a minute left in the period.
