Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- And they said Hakeem Olajuwon was too old to run with the likes of Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley.

For the third straight game, "The Dream" showed he still has some life in his 38-year-old legs, collecting 17 points, eight rebounds and a season-high seven blocks as the Houston Rockets blew past the Detroit Pistons, 103-90.

Houston has won three in a row, improving to 25-25 entering the All-Star break. A non-factor for a better part of the season, Olajuwon drew criticism last month for seeking a trade to Miami after spending all of his 17 seasons with the Rockets.

But the 7-foot Nigeria native has snapped back into his Hall of Fame form of late, amassing 53 points and 30 rebounds in victories over New York, league-leading Philadelphia and the Pistons.

"It's all in the preparation," Olajuwon said of his recent resurgence. "I'm happy to be involved again. When you don't feel like you have a place, it's tough that way. Now everything is fun again."

Olajuwon showed no signs of tiring on Thursday, scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter.

"I feel like I can contribute and I can help this team," Olajuwon said. "I have more confidence and the coach has confidence to put me in the game (in the fourth quarter). I'm more involved in the whole offense. It's not that they're looking for (me) in particular."

Mobley scored 29 points, Maurice Taylor added 22 and Francis 19 for Houston, which snapped a four-game losing streak in Detroit and has won three straight for the first time since December 9-14.

"It all starts with Hakeem," Francis said. "He's really stepped up. Tonight, he had five or six blocks and must have altered five or six others. When you have a guy in the middle like that, it's hard to stop us. A lot of people are waking up and saying, `He's definitely still a factor.'"

Jerry Stackhouse scored 26 points for the Pistons, who failed to post their first three-game winning streak since November 29-December 3.

"It's always disappointing to lose," Stackhouse said. "But the hardest part is to fall short of a goal. It was really important to me for us to get to 20 wins by the All-Star break and it's my fault we didn't get there. I can't go 2-for-12 in the second half and expect us to have a chance."

Olajuwon buried 8-of-13 shots and handed out three assists in 34 minutes and actually began drawing double teams in the fourth quarter after hitting jumpers on three straight trips to give the Rockets a 93-83 lead with 3:54 to play.

"On both ends of the floor, he's been like that for the last three games," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Just excellent. It was a big win for us just to keep the ball rolling. We sort of hit a bottom, played two horrible games at home and just bounced back big. It's almost unfortunate the break is coming now."

"Mobley and Francis both had good games but I thought the big difference was Hakeem," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "He did some good things offensively but he also stifled the middle. Maybe we took shots a little bit quickly (because of him)."

The Pistons did not serious challenge thereafter, slipping to 19-31 at the break. They were 25-23 before the All-Star break last season.

Walt Williams scored 10 points for the Rockets, who shot 53 percent (37-of-70) and scored 100 points for the 14th time in their last 22 games.

Mateen Cleaves scored 16 points and Dana Barros added 15 for Detroit, which shot 37 percent (34-of-91) and held a 48-38 rebounding advantage.

Mobley enjoyed a big opening quarter, scoring 18 points as the Rockets jumped out to a 34-18 lead after 12 minutes and never looked back.
