Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel had 24 points and 12 assists and Raef LaFrentz added 21 and nine rebounds as the Denver Nuggets posted their league-leading 21st home win with a 96-77 romp over the New York Knicks.

Van Exel made 9-of-11 shots and LaFrentz hit 7-of-11 as the Nuggets shot 46 percent (34-of-74) and improved to 21-6 at the Pepsi Center. Van Exel and fellow guard Voshon Lenard combined to make 6-of-10 3-pointers as Denver shot 48 percent (11-of-23) from behind the arc.

"I thought we were out of sync offensively at time tonight," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We did a good job early of pushing the ball. I think we had 19 fast-break points early on. Then we started taking one pass and taking a shot. In the fourth quarter, our offense came back."

All-Star Antonio McDyess recorded his league-leading 39th double-double with 17 points and 11 boards, helping Denver to a 44-42 edge on the glass. The Nuggets had lost their last five home meetings with the Knicks.

"Raef really played well and hit some big shots," McDyess said. "And Nick had his usual great game. It just seems like when we play on the road we don't play the same intensity. We also don't get many transition baskets on the road. We just came out with fire tonight."

All-Star Allan Houston had 15 points and eight rebounds but shot just 5-of-15 as New York fell to 14-10 on the road and lost at Denver for the first time since February 25, 1994. Larry Johnson added 10 for the Knicks, who fell to 12-7 against the Western Conference.

Latrell Sprewell, who joined Houston at the All-Star Game, missed 11 of 14 shots as the Knicks made just 35.5 percent (27-of-76).

"Our energy from the start wasn't there," Sprewell said. "I just had a bad shooting night. We cut the lead to six and they held the fort and got some shots to go down."

New York pulled within 77-72 when Sprewell made two free throws with 8:12 left. Kurt Thomas stripped Van Exel to start a fast break, but Marcus Camby was called for a loose ball foul.

After getting the ball back, James Posey hit a 3-pointer with 6:20 to play to ignite a 13-2 run. Van Exel had five points in the burst, including a free throw that capped it at 92-74 with 2:07 left.

"I believe it was a bad call but it goes that way unfortunately," Thomas said. "We were not able to bounce back after that point."

"Posey hot a huge three and our defense played terrific," Issel said. "We held them to 15 points in the fourth and 33 for the second half. Some of their shots that were falling in the first half didn't in the second half."

McDyess scored nine points in the first period, when the Nuggets built a 32-27 lead that they never relinquished.

Houston sank a pair of free throws 1 1/2 minutes into the second quarter to trim Denver's lead to 35-34. But LaFrentz answered with a 3-pointer with 10:09 to go. New York closed within 42-38 when Glen Rice hit a nine-footer with 8:35 left, but Van Exel drove for a layup to trigger a 7-0 spurt.

Van Exel had 14 points in the first half and the Nuggets took a 54-44 lead into the break. Denver maintained a double-digit lead until the Knicks opened the fourth with a 10-3 burst, capped by Sprewell's free throws.
