Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- David Robinson could not throw it in the ocean. But luckily for the San Antonio Spurs, Danny Ferry could not miss from long range.

Ferry matched a season high with 16 points and knocked down all four of his 3-pointers as the San Antonio Spurs overcame no points from Robinson to post a 104-92 victory 104-92 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Ferry hit 6-of-8 shots and grabbed eight rebounds in 30 minutes, providing All-Star power forward Tim Duncan with the support Robinson normally provides. Duncan collected 28 points and 15 rebounds.

"Danny Ferry did his job just the way we hope he does every night," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "Most people will remember the threes he made, but his defense was key all night."

Robinson, the Spurs' All-Star center, endured a difficult night, missing all five of his shots and grabbing five rebounds in 21 lackluster minutes.

"Danny Ferry was outstanding coming off the bench and hitting shots," Robinson said. "Everyone that came in did a great job. Against a team like Dallas, I may not get a lot of opportunities. I just didn't knock them down."

"As long as Tim has it going and they have the outside game took they can win (without offensive production from Robinson)," Dallas coach Donn Nelson said.

San Antonio has won nine of its last 10 games and snapped a three-game skid against its intrastate rival.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 30 points and Michael Finley added 26 for Dallas, which fell behind for good in the second quarter as Ferry hit a pair of 3-pointers to fuel a 14-2 run.

"They made their shots and today they were the better team," Nowitzki said. "San Antonio is probably the best team in the league right now. They have so many guys."

"They played a great game and gave us all we could handle," Finley said. "I thought the key was their bench -- Danny Ferry in particular. That's what gave them the win."

The Mavs grabbed a 30-28 lead with 8:24 remaining in the first half when Shawn Bradley buried a five-footer. Avery Johnson answered with a layup, sparking San Antonio's decisive run.

Johnson followed with back-to-back jumpers before Ferry connected from 25 feet to make it 37-30. Duncan hit a five-footer and added another basket before Ferry answered a basket by Hubert Davis by drilling a 24-footer from the right sideline, giving the Spurs a 44-32 cushion with 2:49 left in the first half.

Ferry's final 3-pointer came with 8:54 left in the third quarter and stretched San Antonio's advantage to 62-46.

"Danny and the whole guard corps was incredible," Ferry said. "They were great. They shot the ball well and moved the ball around. They made the right decisions."

Antonio Daniels scored 18 points, Johnson had 14, Terry Porter 13 and Derek Anderson 10 for the Spurs, who shot 52 percent (38-of-73), held a 42-40 rebounding edge and scored 18 points off turnovers.

Howard Eisley scored 13 points for Dallas, which shot 41 percent (35-of-86).
