Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- After helping the Eastern Conference All-Stars to victory and putting up a career-high 50 points against the defending NBA champions, Stephon Marbury ran out of steam against the Detroit Pistons.

Marbury managed just 12 points in 30 lackluster minutes as fellow All-Star Jerry Stackhouse poured in 30 points to lead the Pistons to their 13th straight home win over the Nets, an easy 105-86 triumph.

Marbury complained of a stomach ache and cold after Tuesday's gut-wrenching 113-110 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, a game in which he became the first Net to score 50 points since Ray Williams matched a team record with 52 in 1982.

The explosive point guard, riding high after hitting two 3-pointers, including the game-winner, in the final minute of Sunday's All-Star Game, slammed into a wall on Wednesday. He made just 5-of-12 shots while committing four turnovers as he and his teammates were knocked out of contention in the opening period.

"I'm not gonna blame it on last night," Marbury said. "We just didn't come in with the same energy and effort we've had the last couple of weeks. I just didn't have it tonight."

"He can do so many different things," Detroit's Chucky Atkins said after guarding Marbury. "There was no way he was going for 50 on me tonight. I knew that for a fact."

Stackhouse scored seven points during a decisive 13-0 burst that put Detroit ahead for good, 25-11, with 1:44 left in the first quarter.

"We came out with a lot of energy. That's how we've got to play," Stackhouse said. "I was proud of us tonight. We played tough defense, even if we did let up a little in the second half. Our effort was great all night."

The Pistons have not lost at home to the Nets since February 5, 1994 and swept the season series. The four wins account for 20 percent of Detroit's total this season.

"I was really pleased with the way we came out," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "Because we knew they had a discouraging loss last night, we wanted an energetic start because of that and we got one."

Joe Smith scored 20 points, Dana Barros had 15 and Jerome Williams added 10 and 13 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 45 percent (41-of-92) and held a 50-41 rebounding advantage.

Rookie Stephen Jackson led four Nets in double figures with 17 points as New Jersey shot 42 percent (34-of-81) and committed 22 turnovers.

The Nets were a dismal 2-of-15 from 3-point range less than 24 hours after Marbury hit a pair of 3-pointers in the waning moments of regulation to force the Lakers to overtime.

Detroit was 10-of-16 from beyond the arc as Stackhouse hit 4-of-7 shots from long range.

After Marbury drilled a 17-footer to pull the Nets within 12-11, Stackhouse and the Pistons took control. Stackhouse made two free throws and a 27-footer and Williams added a layup before Stackhouse connected from 18 feet for a 21-11 lead with 2:53 remaining in the first quarter.

Smith capped the run with a six-footer and two free throws, stretching the advantage to 14.

"I don't think we came ready to play," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We didn't do a good job with our transition defense. We didn't talk on the defensive end and we were careless with the ball. It's unlike us to have 22 turnovers. Mentally, we just weren't here."
