Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- For some strange reason, the San Antonio Spurs had not beaten the Washington Wizards at home since December 12, 1994 -- until Thursday night.

Tim Duncan had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the first half as the Spurs pulled away early and never looked back, snapping their longest current home losing streak against an opponent with an easy 102-78 rout of the floundering Wizards.

San Antonio, which improved its home record to a league-best 21-4, had lost four in a row to Washington at the Alamodome. The teams did not meet here during the lockout-shortened 1999 campaign.

But Duncan hit 7-of-11 shots in the first half, helping the Spurs open a 52-37 cushion. He finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds and sat out the fourth quarter after the Spurs built a commanding 83-60 lead.

"Exactly the way you want to do it," Duncan said of the Spurs' quick start. "We could get some rest in the fourth quarter and the third quarter, get some guys some playing time and some confidence. Our goal was to win the game, but it was good to get some rest."

David Robinson bounced back from a scoreless performance against Dallas on Tuesday with 16 points as the Spurs won for the 10th time in 11 games and moved into a first-place tie with idle Utah in the Midwest Division.

"(Getting some rest) in the fourth quarter was much-needed," Robinson said after playing just 18 minutes. "We've lucked out with our schedule lately. With the All-Star break, Tim and I really didn't have any breaks. It's been good to get to rest in the fourth quarter."

"I was pleased we were able to give (the starters) some rest," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, whose team will embark on a four-game five-night road trip.

Mitch Richmond scored 18 points, including the 20,000th of his career, for the Wizards, who have lost five in a row since a season-high five-game winning streak. Richmond did receive a standing ovation from the crowd of 14,613.

"It's been a long 13 years," Richmond said after becoming the 26th player in NBA history to reach the plateau. "It fels good to be in the company of 25 or 26 guys who ever did it. The standing ovation was beautiful."

"It was neat our fans reacted the way they did," Popovich said. "It just shows the maturity of our fans."

Tyrone Nesby also scored 18 points and Richard Hamilton added 16 for Washington, which was outscored 25-14 in the first quarter and never seriously threatened thereafter.

San Antonio never trailed and took command when Duncan made two layups, a free throw and a 16-footer to give the Spurs an 11-6 lead. Duncan added a 17-footer and hit a short hook shot before Jaren Jackson's 3-pointer made it 32-14 with 10:06 left in the first half.

"The Spurs really got off to a good start," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "They seemed to hit every open shot they had early in the game."

The Wizards fought back within 11 twice in the second quarter but were blown out in the third period, when Duncan made a 14-footer and converted a three-point play to open a 59-41 lead with 9:56 remaining.

Jackson scored 14 points, Samaki Walker and Derek Anderson and Avery Johnson added 10 apiece for San Antonio, which shot 54 percent (42-of-78) and committed just seven turnovers.

The Spurs have won six straight at home and improved to 7-3 vs. Eastern Conference foes at the Alamodome.
