Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker scored 30 points as the Boston Celtics halted their two-game road skid with a dominant 108-88 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.

Paul Pierce added 18 points as Boston shot 49 percent (39-of-80) from the field, including 12-of-23 from 3-point range, and rolled to its eighth victory in 10 games.

"I thought we got great tempo in the first half," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "Teams have a dilemma when you want to trap us with Antoine and Paul."

The Celtics bounced back from Tuesday's collapse in Vancouver and improved to 1-1 on their pivotal seven-game Western Conference road trip. Boston retained eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

"Once we got the lead, you start thinking about what happened in Vancouver and we didn't want that to happen," said Pierce, the Celtics' leading scorer at 24.5 points per game. "We didn't let the lead slip away and we finished the game strong."

Walker has led the Celtics in scoring 23 times this season.

The SuperSonics opened the fourth quarter with a 13-3 run, highlighted by a spectacular reverse dunk by NBA Slam Dunk champion Desmond Mason that cut the deficit to 93-80.

But Walker scored 11 points in the final 7 1/2 minutes to carry Boston to just its second win in the last eight visits to Seattle.

"We looked like we have been off for a week," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "We were just outworked. I expected the energy not to be there maybe for a half a quarter or a quarter, but we just didn't do anything tonight, offensively or defensively. It was bad on both ends of the floor."

Gary Payton had 20 points and 14 assists and Rashard Lewis scored 17 points for the Sonics, who have lost three of four. Sonics center Patrick Ewing recorded his third double-double in five games with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

"I think we are a better team than the Celics, but we really didn't prove it tonight," Ewing said. "Hopefully, we have this one out of the way and we won't let it happen like that for the rest of the year."

Chris Carr scored only eight points in 19 minutes off the bench but contributed at the other end of the court by holding Payton, Seattle's leading scorer, to 14 points after three quarters.

"Chris Carr gave us a big lift off the bench, being able to guard Payton," O'Brien said.

Eric Williams was perfect from the free-throw line in the middle two periods, making all 10 attempts and helping the Celts build a 90-67 lead.

"I thought Eric Williams getting to the line 10 times and making all 10 was a momentum-killer," O'Brien said.

The Celtics shot 63 percent (12-of-19) and turned the ball over just twice in the second quarter to open a 67-45 halftime lead.

"The key to the first half was we didn't turn the ball over," Pierce said.

The Celtics did not attempt a free throw in the opening quarter but shot 50 percent (14-of-28) and did not commit a turnover as they built a 33-18 lead.
