Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- After struggling through four quarters, Anthony Mason and Tim Hardaway needed an extra session to take control and lead the Miami Heat to a 98-91 overtime victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Hardaway and Mason combined to score 10 of Miami's 12 points in overtime to give the Heat their ninth win in their last 11 games and second overtime victory in a row.

"This is why you play the game," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "It was hot, physical, guys were making shots to go ahead. If we would have lost maybe I wouldn't be talking like this, but that is what it's about -- two teams that really wanted to win going down the stretch."

Hardaway sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer -- his first points since the opening quarter -- with 25 seconds left.

"Everybody has got confidence giving me the ball to make shots at the end of games," Hardaway said. "I wanted the ball and I wanted the shot."

He opened the extra session with a jump shot and, after Toronto's Vince Carter tied the game with a long jumper, gave Miami the lead for good with a 21-foot jump shot with 2:52 left.

Mason followed with a layup on an assist from Hardaway and scored four more points down the stretch to hold off the Raptors.

Hardaway finished with 18 points and 10 assists while Mason added 14 and nine rebounds. Eddie Jones scored 18 points and A.C. Green collected his 299th career double-double with 14 and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Heat, who improved to 5-2 in overtime games this season.

Miami led, 77-72, with 6:13 left in regulation, but a jump shot by Alvin Williams and a 3-pointer by Dell Curry tied the game with 5:20 left to set up a battle down the stretch.

Neither team led by more than three the rest of the way and Toronto seemed to take control when Charles Oakley nailed a jumper for an 86-83 lead with 41 seconds left.

Eddie Jones missed a 3-pointer on Miami's next posession, but Bruce Bowen grabbed the offensive rebound and passed to Hardaway for the game-tying shot.

"We made a couple more plays then they made and that was it," Riley said. "Tim made a big three off a great Bruce Bowen offensive rebound and we got into OT and won it."

In their final possession, the Raptors put the ball in Carter's hand to try and win the game. He took the ball near the 3-point line on the left side, drove toward the baseline and pulled up over a double-team for a 15-foot jumper that went in and out. Jones grabbed the rebound to send the game into the extra period.

"I thought it was a good shot, it just didn't go in," Carter said. "It's going to happen, I just can't believe we didn't pull out a win."

"(Carter's final shot) almost ended the game and we were very fortunate it didn't go in," Riley said.

With Miami leading by two in the second quarter, Anthony Carter scored five straight points to spark a 13-0 run by the Heat that gave them their largest lead, 45-30, with 4:26 remaining in the half.

Carter scored the final six points of the first half to bring Toronto within 51-43 at halftime. After a thunderous dunk on the left baseline, Carter converted a three-point play on Toronto's next posession and sank two free throws with nine seconds left.

The Raptors opened the third quarter with a 12-4 run and tied it, 55-55, on a dunk by Antonio Davis with 7:46 to go.

Carter scored six in the run and finished with 28 points, including all five of Toronto's in the overtime. He made just 10-of-26 shots from the floor and was knocked around by Miami's physical defense.

Carter was hit in the face with an errant pass from Hardaway in the first quarter, accidentally poked in the eye by a teammate in the second and forced to leave in the third after getting kicked in the calf muscle. To top it off, he was kicked in the head while bending down for a loose ball in the fourth quarter.

Toronto led 21-17 with 2:03 left in the first quarter but Miami closed with an 11-0 run on two 3-pointers from Hardway and five points from Dan Majerle.

Davis had 16 points and 11 rebounds to tie his own team record with his sixth straight double-double. Oakley had 13 points and 15 rebounds and Morris Peterson scored all 11 of his points in the first quarter for Toronto, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
