Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Although Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant have been feuding, they showed why they are basketball's best duo.

O'Neal scored 38 points and Bryant collected his second career triple-double as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Charlotte Hornets, 99-94.

O'Neal, who missed the first meeting due to injury, was 14-of-23 from the field, 10-of-17 from the line and grabbed 12 rebounds. He scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.

"I'm trying to get my game back day-to-day, but nobody guards me 1-on-1, ever," O'Neal said.

"Shaq made the difference early in the fourth quarter as he scored most every time he touched it," Bryant said. "We played really well together in there tonight."

Bryant had 25 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds as he lit up Charlotte for the second time this season. Originally drafted by the Hornets in 1996, he scored 44 against them two weeks ago.

The game turned into a shootout in the final period and the Lakers got the better of it.

"We were playing with a lot of energy and kept our mistakes down most of the game," O'Neal said. "Charlotte was getting their way with us for most of the first and second quarters. We were able to reverse their energy right before the half and go on a big run."

After Charlotte's Jamal Mashburn tied it, 81-81, with two foul shots with 6:08 left, Los Angeles used a 10-2 run to pull away, opening a 91-83 lead on O'Neal's 12-footer with 2:47 to play. O'Neal had four in the stretch while Isaiah Rider, Horace Grant and Tyronn Lue also scored.

Charlotte countered with an 8-1 surge, cutting the deficit to 92-89 when Elden Campbell made a baseline jumper with 1:13 to go.

Bryant went around Eddie Robinson with a left-hand reverse layup from behind the backboard that somehow found its way in for his first basket of the second half and a five-point bulge with 50 seconds left.

"I was going for the foul and when I didn't hear the whistle, I said, `I've got to focus on the shot,'" Bryant said. "I didn't realize how far I was from the rim."

"There was a reverse layup by Kobe that hit nothing but net and sealed our fate," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "That's why they're good; they convert."

O'Neal scored 13 straight Lakers points from the 2:45 mark of the third quarter into the fourth to push them ahead by four.

After the Hornets used a 13-2 run to pull within 66-65 in the third period, O'Neal scored on short jumpers, from the line and in the paint to carry his team to a 79-75 lead with 8:28 left.

Mashburn had 26 points and a career-high 15 rebounds while Baron Davis added 22 points, nine assists and nine boards for the Hornets, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Hornets forward Derrick Coleman departed with a strained left calf with 3:52 in the second quarter. Charlotte made just one basket in the first half thereafter.

"We had great effort tonight, they're just a better team," Silas said. "It really hurt when we lost Derrick. We just didn't have enough firepower."

The Lakers went on a 16-1 run to close the second quarter and take the lead.

After Davis went coast-to-coast to give the Hornets their largest lead at 46-33 with 3:37 left, Rider hit a basket before O'Neal went 4-for-4 from the line and Bryant hammered home an alley-oop pass.

O'Neal threw in a hook and Bryant made two free throws before Rider's jumper tied it at 47-47 in the final minute. On the Lakers' final possession, Bryant worked Davis for a 19-footer that gave the Lakers their first lead and a 49-47 edge at the break.

"We were real fortunate to escape tonight," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Kobe was very active tonight. We survived. The turning point of the game was at the end of the second quarter, we were able to turn a deficit into a lead. That gave us some momentum going into the locker room."

Bryant began the game with a wide open leaning dunk from the left side that brought a roar from the crowd. Later in the period, the Hornets countered when Davis threw a no-look pass behind his back to a trailing Mashburn, whose thunderous dunk brought the fans to their feet.
