Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics tried to keep the Atlanta Hawks winless in February, but Jason Terry and Dikembe Mutumbo made sure that did not happen.

Terry had 28 points and six assists and Mutumbo made two key baskets down the stretch as the Hawks held off a late run to notch a 101-94 victory.

Atlanta led, 88-78, with 5:49 to go, but the Sonics ran off 12 of the next 15 points and got within one after Brent Barry made a techinical free throw with 1:47 remaining.

Gary Payton missed a layup that could have put Seattle ahead, and Mutumbo tipped in a missed shot by Chris Crawford at the other end to extend Atlanta's lead to three.

After a turnover by Payton, Terry drove to the basket and dished to Mutumbo, who hit a layup over two defenders that made it 95-90 with 21 seconds left.

Larry Robinson made four free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal Atlanta's first win of the month. The Hawks opened a six-game road trip with their first road win over a Western Conference foe

"The start is really important," Atlanta coach Kruger said. "On a six-game trip you want to get out of the chute early."

Mutumbo scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go with 16 rebounds and two blocked shots. Lorenzen Wright added 16 points and 11 rebounds and rookie DerMarr Johnson and Robinson combined for 23 points off the bench for the Hawks, who ended a seven-game losing streak.

Atlanta shot 51 percent (41-of-81) and had a 44-31 rebounding edge.

Terry -- who grew up in Seattle -- made 11-of-23 shots from the floor, was 3-of-4 from behind the arc and made two key defensive plays down the stretch.

"It was great. I had about 50 people in attendance and probably more who got in on their own," he said.

With Atlanta leading 93-90 with 1:17 to go, Terry intercepted a pass from Ruben Patterson. After missing a short jumper at the other end, Terry knocked the ball away from Payton at mid-court, thwarting another offesnive opportunity for the Sonics.

"Jason has been playing like that," Kruger said. "He's a terrific young player that is getting better all the time."

Payton led Seattle's fourth quarter charge with seven points in the final 12 minutes, including five during its key run late in the game. The All-Star guard finished with 21 points and 13 assists after being held to four points in the first half.

Seattle's Ruben Patterson added 18 points and eight rebounds and Vin Baker chipped in 15 and six off the bench. Patrick Ewing scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed six rebounds for the Sonics, who lost their third straight and fell to 0-24 when trailing after three quarters.

"I don't see the sense of urgency that we need to win some games. It's almost like we're in a coasting mood," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "It's a matter of getting their heads up and quit feeling sorry for ourselves and looking for someone to blame."

The Sonics held a 42-41 lead at the break and ran off seven straight points to open the third sparked by four straight point from Rashard Lewis.

Terry drained a 3-pointer to spark an Atlanta comeback and the Hawks reclaimed the lead after Henderson buried a hook shot with 3:04 to go in the third quarter.

The Sonics never lead in the first quarter and fell behind by as many as 10 in the first half after Atlanta opened the second quarter with a 12-4 run highlighted by 3-pointers from Terry and Robinson.

Trailing 39-31 with 5:26 left in the first half, Seattle used a 7-0 run to get within one and took a 42-41 lead when Patrick Ewing made a short jumper with 33 seconds left. Terry missed a jumper on Atlanta's next posession and Mutumbo grabbed the rebound, but was whistled for a traveling violation as time ran out.

The Hawks jumped out to a 10-2 lead as all five starters scored in the first four minutes of the game. Seattle battled back to tie it with 17 seconds to go in the first quarter, but Terry sank a 19-foot jumper with three seconds left to give the Hawks a 25-23 lead after 12 minutes.
