Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Don't give the Central Division title to the Milwaukee Bucks just yet.

Jamal Mashburn keyed a decisive run that bridged the final two quarters as the Charlotte Hornets continued their success in the division with a 103-93 victory the Bucks.

Mashburn scored nine points in a 16-2 burst that gave the Hornets a commanding 83-67 advantage with 9:51 remaining. Charlotte led by double digits the rest of the way.

Although Mashburn sparked the run, Baron Davis provided the highlight by hitting an 89-footer at the third-quarter buzzer.

Mashburn finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds and Davis scored 21 points for the Hornets, who are third in the Central, 4 1/2 games behind first-place Milwaukee.

"Mashburn was on fired tonight and we did a good job on the offensive glass," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "When Mash rebounds it allows us to push the ball and make things happen. I think running our offense this way allows some of our natural talents to show."

"It's very difficult to win when you're giving up 49, 37, 32 points to one player every night," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "Mashburn carried his team tonight. A couple of nights ago, (Philadelphia's Allen) Iverson carried his team. We need someone who is going to step up and make plays."

Charlotte improved to 13-5 against Central Division foes and 2-1 vs. the Bucks.

Ray Allen netted 30 points and Glenn Robinson 24 for Milwaukee, which has dropped three of its last four games.

"We played loose, irresponsible basketball the whole night," Karl said. "We played like we thought Charlotte was just gonna give it up to us."

It was close through the first 3 1/2 quarters, and the Bucks were within 67-65 with 2:09 left in the third quarter following a jumper by Robinson, who made 11-of-22 shots from the field.

Mashburn began to take over from there, scoring five straight points before Jamal Magloire made 1-of-2 from the line for a 73-65 advantage.

Robinson hit two free throws with seven-tenths of a second left. But on the ensuing inbounds, Davis took a pass from Mashburn in front of his own bench and unleased a one-handed heave that swished through the basket as time expired.

"That shot had a big impact tonight," Davis said. "It gave us three points and a big boost. I was telling Lindsey Hunter let me take the shot. I called that shot."

Robinson also thought the shot was huge.

"Most definitely. It was a six-point game, and that shot made it nine," he said. "We were already searching the whole night and that definitely hurt us."

The Hornets carried the momentum of that shot into the fourth. Mashburn hit a technical free throw and a jumper before Eddie Robinson made consecutive baskets for an 83-67 lead with 9:51 remaining. Robinson scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting.

Milwaukee got no closer than the final score.

Elden Campbell added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 51 percent (40-of-79) while holding Milwaukee to 46.5 percent (40-of-86). Charlotte also held a 44-35 rebounding advantage.

Allen, who made 12-of-20 shots, scored 14 points in the opening half, helping the Bucks to a 50-49 lead at the break.
