Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- On the brink of tying a dubious record for overtime futility, the Los Angeles Clippers finally showed some composure in crunch time.

Los Angeles made all five of its shots in the extra session to snap a five-game losing streak with a 111-106 overtime victory against the Detroit Pistons.

"It's a great win for us because we struggle in overtime," said Clippers coach Alvin Gentry. "We're a team that is struggling and when you're struggling you take a win whenever you can get it."

Despite trailing by as many four points in the extra period, Los Angeles captured its first overtime win since a 106-101 victory over Houston on April 23, 1999.

The Clippers had lost nine consecutive overtime games dating to the 1998-99 season. The Golden State Warriors hold the NBA record with 10 overtime losses in a row over the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons.

Eric Piatkowski had 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the arc, including his 500th career 3-pointer for the Clippers. Rookie Darius Miles had 15 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and Jeff McInnis added 12 points and 12 assists for Los Angeles, which improved to 1-5 on its current eight-game road trip.

"This was satisfying. We've been losing overtime games at home all year so it's big," Miles said. "We just played our hardest. I think we got over a nice little hump."

Detroit scored the first four points of overtime on a layup by Ben Wallace and a pair of free throws from Joe Smith. A 3-pointer from Piatkowski brought Los Angeles within one and Lamar Odom gave them their first lead of the extra session, 101-100, on a jumper with 3:07 remaining.

McInnis and Chucky Atkins traded jumpers and Miles put the Clippers ahead for good, 105-104, when he drove to the basket for a layup with 1:16 to go.

Sean Rooks followed with a jumper and two free throws and Corey Maggette sank a pair of free throws with 1.6 seconds left to seal the victory.

The Clippers led, 84-70, with 9:22 left in the fourth quarter, but Detroit closed within three after it reeled off 11 points in a row, sparked by five straight from John Wallace, who finished with 13 points.

Los Angeles increased the lead to six, but Stackhouse scored seven points during a 9-0 run for the Pistons, who got their first lead of the second half, 88-87, when he converted a three-point play with 5:16 left.

Odom gave the Clippers the lead again, 91-90, with a layup with 3:51 to go, and followed with a jumper and two free throws to put Los Angeles ahead by five.

After a pair of free throws from Ben Wallace, Odom faltered. He sank just 1-of-2 from the line and, after Wallace made a layup that brought Detroit within four, committed a costly turnover with 1:39 remaining that gave the Pistons the opportunity to tie the game.

After Los Angeles and Detroit both missed chances to score, Stackhouse tied the game with 35 seconds left, sinking a long jumper with his toes on the 3-point line.

Odom missed a short jumper, and the Clippers' chance to take the lead, with 25 seconds to go. Detroit took control and isolated Stackouse at the top of the key. The All-Star guard let the shot clock dwindle and passed to Jerome Williams with one second left, but the shot clock expired as the ball reached his hands.

"I guess I left Jerome hung out to dry," Stackhouse said. "I thought a shot would open up so I waited too long. I probably should have gone ahead and shot it anyway."

Los Angeles had one final chance with eight-tenths of a second left, but Stackhouse blocked a 3-point attempt by Odom at the buzzer.

Odom finished with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists in 28 foul-plagued minutes. He scored 10 points after the third quarter as Los Angeles snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Pistons and won in Detroit for the first time since March 31, 1992.

"It's not about coming back here and getting a win, it's about us winning a game on the road," Gentry said. "We were in desperate need of a win and that's what it amounted to. We need a win on the road and we needed a win in overtime."

Gentry was an assistant for the Pistons for three seasons starting in 1995-96 and was coach in Detroit for three seasons prior to Irvine.

"I want Detroit to do well, except the two games they play us," Gentry said. "I do not have any added factor or revenge coming in here."

"It was a big win for coach (Gentry) to come back to Detroit, his old home," Miles admitted. "I know he wanted to come out on top and show that he's doing good now."

The Clippers shot 50 percent (40-of-80) from the floor and held double-digit leads throughout the game until the Pistons used a big fourth quarter to force overtime.

Stackhouse led Detroit with 30 points but sank just 10-of-26 shots and made crucial mistakes down the stretch.

Smith had 20 points ands 13 rebounds before fouling out in overtime and Wallace added 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocks for Detroit, which fell to 1-2 in overtime and 1-24 when trailing at halftime.

"This is a team that hasn't won in overtime in who knows how long and we let them beat us in overtime," Stackhouse said. "They should have never even gotten there. We had no sense of urgency until the fouth quarter and you can't do that."
