Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- It was a big night for small forwards.

Shawn Marion scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Phoenix Suns posted a 110-104 triumph over the Orlando Magic, who had their nine-game winning streak snapped despite a career-best 44 points by Tracy McGrady.

Marion had 17 points in the second half and has scored 111 points in his last four games for Phoenix, which has won seven of nine. Tony Delk added 22 points and Rodney Rodgers 20 as the Suns posted their sixth straight win over the Magic.

"We've had kind of a bizarre year, so any kind of road win is a big win for us," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "To beat the hottest team in the league at home is no doubt a big win for us."

"We were glad to come in and get this one," Rogers said. "They were chasing a franchise-record 10 wins in a row and we spoiled it for him."

McGrady had 25 points in the opening half for Orlando, which lost for the first time since January 25. The Magic also had their six-game home winning streak snapped.

"It was a nice run, really it was," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "I was proud of them because I thought they were struggling to make points but they kept playing hard. If we play hard every night, then we will win more than we will lose and I will be proud of that."

"We can't do anything about losing this game tonight," Magic guard Darrell Armstrong said. "We can't do anything about being outplayed."

The game was tied 77-77 entering the fourth quarter but Phoenix led 84-79 following a free throw by Delk 2:15 into the quarter. Armstrong buried a 3-pointer with 8:35 to go but Orlando was whistled for a technical and Vinny Del Negro made the technical.

Rodney Rogers followed with a jumper to push the lead back to five and the lead was 97-90 following a 15-footer by Jason Kidd with 5:13 left. But Don Reid, who scored a season high 13 points, had a three-point play 23 seconds later to spark a 7-0 burst that tied the game.

The game remained tied with 2:22 left when Kidd hit two free throws. Armstrong missed a 3-pointer and Rogers had a basket off a feed from Kidd with 98 seconds to for a 103-99 edge. McGrady and Marion exchanged baskets but McGrady missed three free throws in the final 54 seconds and Orlando never recovered.

Phoenix made 15-of-17 free throws in the final quarter.

"You can't blame it on the free throws, I mean those guys shot 52 percent from the field so they were scoring a lot of points, we just couldn't get any stops," McGrady said. "

Marion's basket gave the Suns a 16-5 lead 5:13 into the contest but Orlando fought back, scoring the next 13 points. McGrady's 3-pointer with 2:50 remaining in the quarter capped the spurt.

McGrady, who recorded his third 40-point game of the season, had 16 in the opening quarter.

"Thank God for Tracy tonight," Rivers added. "Without him, we would have been beaten pretty bad."

"He is long and very talented down on the box," Kidd said. "He understands the game and is going to get better. They have a jewel in Tracy."

The second quarter was back and forth with neither team opening more than a five-point lead. The Suns led 47-45 at the half with Marion and Delk scoring 11 points apiece.

Phoenix offset 14 turnovers by making 14-of-27 shots in the half. McGrady made 10-of-17 shots, including 3-of-5 3-point attempts over the opening 24 minutes.

Kidd had 15 points and 15 assists.
