Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Jason Williams scored 22 points and dished out seven assists as the Sacramento Kings overcame the absence of Chris Webber and snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Atlanta Hawks, 94-80.

The Kings improved to 2-2 without Webber, who sprained his left ankle in an overtime win at Utah on February 13. They announced before the game that their All-Star forward would miss their upcoming three-game road trip and will remain in Sacramento to continue rehabilitation.

A 28-12 first quarter by Sacramento helped deliver the knockout blow early to the Hawks. Williams and Doug Christie each scored seven points in the first 12 minutes.

"It was a different game," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "We were really active in the first quarter and got the lead. I don't know how many steals we got, but we got our hands on a lot of balls. It was good to get this win before we head out on a three-game trip."

A layup by Scot Pollard snapped a 10-10 tie and triggered a 15-2 run by Sacramento to close the opening quarter. Christie scored seven points and Peja Stojakovic had six during the burst, which was capped by Williams' 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Dikembe Mutombo's hook shot capped a 12-2 run for Atlanta that got the Hawks to within 52-44 with just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter. But Vlade Divac hit back-to-back jumpers as Sacramento scored seven straight points and the lead did not dip below 11 thereafter.

Williams fell two points shy of his season-high in making 9-of-16 shots. Stojakovic scored 19 points on 7-of-21 shooting while Divac had 13 points and 19 rebounds.

"We went against the best shot blocker in the league and it was hard," Divac said. "What Scot and I tried to do was be aggressive but he still blocked a lot of our shots."

Pollard and Lawrence Funderburke each had 10 points for Sacramento, is 8-2 in its last 10 games at home. The Kings avenged a 107-99 loss in Atlanta on December 12.

Jason Terry scored 16 points and Lorenzen Wright added 15 for Atlanta, which fell to 2-1 on its six-game road trip. Mutombo, the subject of trade rumors, had 11 points, nine rebounds and a season-high nine blocks in what may prove to be his final game as a Hawk.

"It is a part of life that each player goes through," Mutombo said. "So many great players get traded each day, it is not brand new to me I enjoy the Hawks and I enjoy coming in night after night and doing my job. If something is going to happen, then I just have to live with it."

Mutombo was whistled for a technical for waving his finger after blocking a shot attempt by Pollard in the first quarter. Although it is legal for him to wave his finger at the crowd after a block, the officials felt the gesture was directed at the Sacramento bench.

"I have nothing to do with the bench," he said. "Anybody on the bench is my friend. I will call the league first thing in the morning so I will not be fined for it."

Chris Crawford had 14 points while Wright had 14 rebounds. Atlanta shot 38 percent (30-of-79).
