Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Grizzlies' pending move continues to inspire them.

Michael Dickerson scored 23 points and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf added a season-high 19 as the Vancouver Grizzlies extended their franchise-record winning streak to five games with a 116-104 triumph over the Washington Wizards.

"He's been playing more minutes in the last five ballgames than he had been," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said of Abdul-Rauf. "It was just a matter of trying to get him in the rotation. But Mahmoud has been very patient with it and played well in practice. He's kept himself ready to play, and now that he's getting an opportunity, he's taken advantage of it."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim also scored 19 points and Grant Long had 16 and 14 rebounds as Vancouver won for the first time in five tries at Washington. Long connected on all six of his shots from the floor.

Vancouver has yet to lose since club owner Michael Heisley was given permission to relocate the team as soon as he was able to find a suitable home.

"I think it's totally a coincidence," Lowe said. "I don't think our guys are playing for any other reason. I don't think they're playing because Mr. Stern made his statements, absolutely not. Hopefully, we're just learning what it's all about -- being unselfish and helping each other."

The Grizzlies scored at will against the Wizards for the second time this season -- Vancouver posted a 118-104 victory on December 20. The two wins over Washington are the third and fourth highest scoring games for the Grizzlies this season. Mike Bibby scored 10 points and dished out 13 assists.

"If we keep playing like we're playing, then good things are going to happen to us," Bibby said. "We started out good at home and we kept it up. All the distractions, none of us can control anything that's happened -- we just go out and play."

Jumpers by the Wizards' Juwan Howard and Richard Hamilton 45 seconds into the second half drew Washington within 59-54. Vancouver went on a 13-0 run thereafter, capped by a three-point play by Dickerson for a 72-54 lead with 7:45 left in the quarter.

Vancouver led, 83-70, heading into the fourth quarter and held a 106-91 advanatge with just over four minutes to play. The Wizards went on an 11-4 run to cut the deficit to 110-102 with 63 seconds to go. But three free throws by Long and a pair by Abdul-Rauf sealed the victory.

The Grizzlies scored six straight points for their first double-digit lead of the night at 59-48 with 27 seconds left in the first half. Felipe Lopez hit two free throws for Washington, which trailed, 59-50, at halftime.

Howard scored 27 points to lead Washington, which dropped its third straight at home. Chris Whitney added 24 points, including a career-high six 3-pointers.

"We allowed this team to do a great job offensively against us," Howard said. "They always find a way to get hot against us. In the last game that we played in Vancouver, it was the same story."

Mitch Richmond, who moved into 25th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list on Sunday, missed all 11 shots he attempted and scored just eight points. Hamilton shot 4-of-14 for 14 points for the Wizards, who played their first game at home following a four-game road trip.

"It would be easy for us to allow ourselves to use that as an excuse," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "We played four games in six days and I'm sure it was espceially exhausting on Mitch who was just coming back from injury and not quite in as good as shape as he would like to be."

Washington shot 41 percent (34-of-83) and was outrebounded, 46-37.

The Grizzlies scored over 100 points for the 12th time this year and improved to 7-5 in those contets.
