Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Perhaps the only redeeming thing about futility is the joy a team such as the Los Angeles Clippers derives from ending it.

Two days after posting their first overtime win in close to two years, the Clippers completed their first back-to-back road wins since April 1999 with a 100-94 triumph over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Lamar Odom scored 23 points and rookie Quentin Richardson had 12 of his 19 in the fourth quarter as both keyed important runs in the final period.

The Clippers had lost five in a row overall and nine straight in overtime -- one shy of an NBA record -- before pulling out Monday's 111-106 thriller against Detroit. They had dropped six straight at Gund Arena before holding off the struggling Cavaliers down the stretch.

"It's a really good win for us," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "I look today and there's two teams in the East and four teams in the West with winning road records, so you can see how hard it is to win on the road in this league."

With the game knotted at 77-77 and 9:01 to play, Richardson scored six points during an 8-0 run that put Los Angeles in front to stay with 6:06 remaining.

"I thought Quentin did a great job in (the fourth) quarter," Gentry said. "He was really good offensively."

After Andre Miller's basket pulled Cleveland within 89-87 with 3:09 left, Odom drilled a 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 burst, ending any hopes of a comeback by Cleveland.

"That 3-pointer was big," Odom said. "I'm getting used to the double-teams, so if I'm going to score, I'm going to have to score quick. I was really feeling it at the time. I just wanted to knock it down."

"I thought Lamar was sensational," Gentry said. "This was the best game he's played since I've been here."

The Clippers had not won consecutive road contests since April 11-16, 1999.

Clarence Weatherspoon scored 18 points for the Cavs, who have lost 11 of 12 and were unable to follow up on Monday's 85-84 triumph over the league-worst Bulls.

Rookie Darius Miles had his seventh double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Jeff McInnis added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the Clippers, who held a 48-40 rebounding advantage and shot 45 percent (37-of-83).

Miller finished with 16 points, Chris Gatling added 12 and Cedric Henderson 11 for the Cavs, who shot 45 percent (38-of-84) and yielded 18 points off turnovers.

"They played with a lot of energy," Miller said of the Clippers. "They were able to get some rebounds and get some easy fast break points. They got a few points off of our turnovers."

Cleveland led 51-47 at the half behind nine points by Gatling, who managed just three after intermission.

The teams battled back and forth until Richardson snapped a 77-77 tie with a dunk. McInnis followed with a five-footer in the lane before Richardson hit a jumper and dunked again for an 85-77 lead midway through the final period.

Miller's 14-footer got the Cavs back within two with 3:11 to play. But Odom calmly sank a 26-footer, McInnis connected from 20 feet and Sean Rooks drained two free throws to make it 96-87 with 41 seconds left.

"With 2:30 to 2:45 remaining in the game, they knocked down three shots," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "They made that three in front of our bench. It was a big shot and they made two others."

"The win (at Detroit) helped us get over the hump," McInnis said. "We felt Cleveland was a step slow. When they had a chance to take over the game, they didn't do it. Everybody came through and everybody made big shots."
