Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored 32 points as the Detroit Pistons built a huge lead and held off a late rally for a 90-85 victory over the New York Knicks.

The Pistons built a 23-point lead only to see New York stage a furious comeback that fell just short.

"We shot 36 percent and won the game," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "I thought our defense was really good. We got tentative offensively and we started missing shots and let them back in the game. When you beat New York, you've done a good job."

Baskets by Marcus Camby and Latrell Sprewell pulled New York within 47-41 with 10:20 to go in the third quarter. Stackhouse capped a 9-0 burst with back-to-back 3-pointers for a 56-41 bulge two minutes later.

A 10-1 run by the Pistons, featuring 3-pointers by Stackhouse and Chucky Atkins, gave Detroit its largest lead at 75-52 with 75 seconds left in the third quarter.

New York pulled within 77-58 at the end of the period and began the fourth with a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to 81-74 with 5:37 to play. Camby's layup pulled the Knicks to within 85-80 with 1:43 to go.

Chris Childs made 1-of-2 free throws to make it 87-85 with 24 seconds remaining. The miss ended a streak of 19 consecutive free throws by Childs. Joe Smith made two free throws and Atkins one to seal the win.

"We knew they'd make a run," Smith said. "We didn't know how hard they were going to make it. It is just part of the game. They got momentum."

Smith finished with 20 points and eight rebounds while Atkins added 16 points in support of Stackhouse. The Pistons have split their last six home games.

Ben Wallace grabbed 10 rebounds for Detroit while Stackhouse added eight assists and seven boards. The Pistons were outscored, 27-13, in the fourth quarter.

"Its realistic (to play good defense) for long stretches but to say you can do it for 48 minutes is unrealistic," Stackhouse said. "That would be the perfect game."

Camby had 24 points and 11 rebounds for New York, which dropped its fifth straight road game. The Knicks got horrific outings from Sprewell and former Piston Allan Houston. Sprewell was 5-of-18 for 11 points while Houston shot 2-of-7 for eight points before fouling out.

"I had my defensive hat on tonight," Stackhouse said. "They have got two off-guards and I take it as a challenge to play great defense."

"Our focus is up and down right now," Houston said. "We are ready physically but that is only half the battle. I didn't think I was settling for bad shots. They were running guys at me and I was trying to get the ball to guys who were open."

Childs and Kurt Thomas each scored 12 points off the bench for New York. The Knicks' bench outscored their counterparts, 40-14. New York shot 37.5 percent (30-of-80).

"We are just not playing well right now," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "I don't know what it is. We played well in the fourth quarter but that was desperation and desperation doesn't do a whole lot unless you win."

Camby made 9-of-12 shots and had five of his rebounds on the offensive end.

"It is easy to play hard when you're down 20-something," Camby said. "We should have brought that fourth-quarter intensity into the first quarter."

Detroit rookie Mateen Cleaves played his first game after a one-game absence due to the tragic death of his brother Herbert,in a drive-by shooting. Cleaves did not score and took just one shot in six minutes.

The teams have split their first two meetings this season.
