Game StoryCHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets had the lead for just four minutes but had it when it counted.
David Wesley sank a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to give the Hornets their first lead since the game's opening moments and propel them to a 93-91 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
Wesley made just 1-of-6 from 3-point range but nailed one when it mattered, lifting Charlotte to its fourth win in its last five games.
The Hornets trailed, 89-88, with 57 seconds to go when Golden State opted to double-team Elden Campbell in the post, leaving Wesley wide open to nail the biggest shot of the game.
"Elden got the double-team, Baron (Davis) ran the baseline, they went for the double-team and that left me open," Wesley said. "I was able to knock it down."
Antawn Jamison missed a 16-foot jumper with five seconds remaining and P.J. Brown sank two clutch free throws with four seconds left to ensure Charlotte's victory. Jamison sank a jumper at the buzzer to complete the scoring.
"That's the story this year," Jamison said. "We put ourselves in postion to win and then come up short. We tried to let Campbell post up, Mookie (Blaylock) came down on the double-team. Wesley did what he was supposed to."
The Hornets shot 50 percent (42-of-84) and used a balanced attack that featured six players in double figures, including all five starters.
Jamal Mashburn had 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists and Brown collected 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
Wesley finished with 14 points and eight assists while Campbell and Baron Davis had 14 points and eight rebounds each. Eddie Robinson added 10 points and three steals off the bench for Charlotte, which held a 49-35 rebounding edge.
"E-Rob is really learning," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "In a couple of years he is going to be something. We need him to step up."
The Hornets were just 5-of-20 from the arc and 4-of-7 from the line on their home floor but still managed to come back from a 10-point third-quarter deficit.
"We had to find a way to win," said Silas, who notched his 100th career coaching victory. "We didn't take care of the ball, we didn't defend. We were lucky to come out with the win. It wasn't pretty, but we did it."
The Warriors led, 82-74, with 8:45 to go when Charlotte began its comeback. The Hornets scored six of the next eight points to close within four with 6:30 left.
Neither team scored until Brown nailed a 16-footer to make it 84-82 with four minutes left. Mashburn tied the game for the first time since the third quarter with a 21-foot jumper on Charlotte's following possession.
After Larry Hughes and Mashburn traded jumpers, Blaylock made a layup and Jamison made 1-of-2 from the line to give the Warriors an 89-86 lead with 1:22 to play.
Wesley came down and missed a layup but Campbell slammed back the rebound to bring Charlotte within one. Jamison missed and Brown pulled down the rebound, setting the stage for Wesley.
The Hornets are have won just three of their last nine home games as they began a five-game homestand.
Jamison had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Hughes added 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists as Golden State dropped its sixth straight game and fell to 2-8 on the road against the Eastern Conference.
Blaylock and Bob Sura combined for 31 points and 11 assists in the backcourt for the Warriors, who fell to 0-2 on their five-game road trip.
"We just need a win," Golden State coach Dave Cowens said. "We know the game plan, we've got to stick with it, we can't change it on the fly."
The Warriors controlled the first half, using a 20-11 run to close the first quarter and take a 33-24 lead heading into the second. Wesley scored four straight points to spark a 16-4 run that brought Charlotte within 47-45 with 4:23 left in the first half, but Golden State responded with 10 straight points and led, 57-49, at halftime.
"We realize we came out sluggish," Wesley said. "Every time we got close, they pulled away again. Luckily we stayed close enough to take the lead at the end."
