Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- For different reasons, former "Fab Five" teammates Chris Webber and Juwan Howard did not have a reunion.

While Webber missed his fifth straight game with a sprained left ankle and Howard departed after being traded, the Sacramento Kings defeated the Washington Wizards, 115-110, behind Doug Christie's season-high 32 points.

Webber did not make the three-game Eastern swing as the All-Star forward remained in Sacramento to receive treatment on his ankle, which he injured against Utah eight days ago.

Acquired from Washington in 1998, Webber normally gets up for his former teams. But the Kings survived and improved to 3-2 without their superstar.

Howard was a teammate of Webber's at Michigan in the early 1990s and with the Wizards from 1994-98. But Wizards president Michael Jordan swung an eight-player deal that sent Washington's leading scorer to the Dallas Mavericks. The Wizards received forward Christian Laettner among the five players they acquired.

"Juwan will always hold a very special place in all of our hearts because he demonstrated a high level of professionalism in everything that he has done," Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton said. "He was always in great shape and he practiced hard each and every day. I think he really, really loved this franchise and loved this city. He gave his all."

"I'm hurt. I feel like I lost a brother," Wizards guard Chris Whitney said. "He and I were here the longest. ... We bonded really well. From the first day I cam from Sacramento, he's the first guy that ran up to me and embraced me."

Jordan traded three players, waived three more and placed guard Rod Strickland on the injured list, leaving the team with just eight in uniform. Richard Hamilton scored 29 points and Whitney added 24 and 11 assists for Washington, which lost to Sacramento for the sixth straight time.

"I thought that the guys played with a lot of determination," said Leonard Hamilton, whose team has dropped eight of nine.

"It's a strange game when you have a situation like that," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "They are going to play free and easy and the guys who don't get minutes are going to get minutes. It was just a strange game."

Christie made sure it did not have a strange outcome as he made 9-of-16 shots and 11-of-11 free throws, equaling his point total from November 16 against the Los Angeles Lakers.

"We just really wanted to keep pushing the ball at them," said Christie, who also had nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. "We knew they did not have all their guys tonight and we started to make some plays there at the end. A team like that who does not have everybody, they're deadly because they're going to come out and play `Free Willy' and just go at it."

Vlade Divac scored 27 points and Peja Stojakovic added 22 for the Kings, who shot 51 percent (40-of-78) and made 28-of-33 free throws. Jason Williams had 13 points, nine assists and no turnovers.

The Kings took the lead for good at 11-10 on a three-point play by Christie. He scored eight points in the second quarter, when Sacramento opened a 10-point lead before settling for a 51-44 halftime bulge.

The Wizards pulled within three points before 3-pointers by Williams and Stojakovic opened a 67-58 lead with 5:42 left in the third quarter. Christie scored 15 points in the final period to keep Washington at bay.

"This is a good way to start (the road trip)," Divac said. "It's going to be much tougher against Toronto and New York. We are going to have to play much better and smarter."

Mitch Richmond also scored 24 points and Jahidi White added 18 and 14 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 44 percent (41-of-94).
