Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Hours after acquiring a starting forward, the Dallas Mavericks' current frontcourt had a field day at the Boston Celtics' expense.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points, Greg Buckner added a season-high 15 and center Shawn Bradley added 14 as the Mavericks coasted to a 98-91 victory over the Celtics.

Earlier Thursday, the Mavericks completed an eight-player deal for Washington Wizards power forward Juwan Howard, sending forwards Christian Laettner, Loy Vaught and Etan Thomas and guards Hubert Davis and Courtney Alexander to Washington. Dallas also received reserve centers Obinna Ekezie and Calvin Booth.

"There was a lot of distractions before the game and the first thing coach (Don Nelson) said is, `I don't want you guys to worry about anything about the trade,'" rookie forward Eduardo Najera said.

While Howard sat briefly at the MCI Center watching his former team suffer a 115-110 loss to Sacramento, his new teammates posted their third win in four games.

Nowitzki, Buckner and Bradley combined to make 21-of-38 shots, grabbed 21 rebounds and blocked four shots -- all by the 7-6 Bradley.

Normally a guard, Buckner started at small forward, a position that may soon be manned by Howard.

The victory was the first for Nelson since his return from prostate cancer surgery. The Mavericks suffered a 119-109 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers here in Nelson's first game back Tuesday.

"Between (Najera) and Buckner, we really needed somebody to step up," Nelson said. "I was worried about the game. I thought the Celtics played terrific. I thought we played pretty well. The effort was good."

Paul Pierce had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Celtics, who have dropped three straight since back-to-back road wins at Seattle and Portland. The Celtics are 2-4 on their current seven-game road trip.

Michael Finley scored 19 points for the Mavs, who shot 51 percent (40-of-79), held a 43-42 rebounding edge and scored 21 points off turnovers.

"It was hard to see some of the guys leave (in the trade) from some of the personal relationships we've built over this season," Finley said. "It was a business decision. On the other hand, we're getting some quality players. Hopefully, both teams can benefit from this trade."

Antoine Walker scored 17 points, Vitaly Potapenko added 16 and rookie Mark Blount 10 for Boston, which shot 42 percent (32-of-77) and outscored Dallas, 18-13, at the line.

Trailing 28-24 after the first quarter, the Mavs took the lead for good in the second period, when they outscored the Celtics, 32-18.

Finley scored on consecutive trips to forge a 32-32 tie before Potapenko made a layup to give Boston its last lead with 7:13 left in the first half.

Najera answered with a bucket and Finley put Dallas in front for good with a 3-pointer. Nowitzki hit a 20-footer and converted a rare four-point play, drilling a 3-pointer and drawing a foul from Pierce in the process.

The ensuing free throw gave the Mavs a 43-35 lead with 4:35 remaining in the first half.

Boston responded by reeling off the next eight points, forging a 43-43 tie on Milt Palacio's 3-pointer just over three minutes before intermission. But Gary Trent hit a jumper and Steve Nash followed with a 13-footer as Dallas closed the half with a 13-3 burst, capped by a three-point play by Buckner.

"I thought our guys scraped to get back in the game," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "This is a very tough group to play."

Pierce's 3-pointer with 1:38 to play got the Celtics within 92-87, but Finley hit an eight-footer and Buckner added a layup to seal the win.

"Though we played hard enough to win the game, down the stretch they got too many open looks," Pierce said. "They're a good team. You can't make mistakes, especially late in the game."
