Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Maurice Taylor scored a career-high 34 points as the Houston Rockets ended a seven-year, 12-game jinx against the Orlando Magic with a 105-95 victory.

The Rockets had lost 12 straight regular-season meetings with the Magic since March 1, 1994. But Taylor, who played all 48 minutes, collected 19 points in the first half and ultimately won a shootout with Tracy McGrady.

"I really didn't think I had scored that much," Taylor said. "Usually, you know how much you have when you come out of the game, but I never came out. Right now, I feel really comfortable and the guys are giving me the ball a lot. I think I have more faith in myself, too."

Walt Williams drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing to put Houston ahead, 92-91, with 6:53 remaining.

Orlando hit a bucket to pull within 95-93, but Steve Francis sank a runner and a long jumper before Taylor nailed a 19-footer and a pull-up jumper with 54 seconds to play as the Rockets held the Magic without a point the rest of the way.

McGrady finished with 32 points but could not trade baskets with Taylor, who was 11-of-20 from the floor and 12-of-15 from the stripe.

"We want to let everyone know that we're for real," Taylor said. "We feel we can play with everyone. We have the feeling that no one can beat us, we're feeling unbeatable. If we play the way we are capable of playing, we can beat anybody."

Houston shot 50 percent (37-0f-74) from the field and had four players in double figures. Cuttino Mobley scored 23 points and Francis added 17 and 11 rebounds. Hakeem Olajuwon chipped in 16 points and 12 boards.

Trading baskets throughout, McGrady and Taylor combined for 10-of-18 shooting and 36 points in the first half as Houston took a 57-54 advantage at the break.

McGrady got the first basket of the game, but Taylor followed with back-to-back shots before McGrady hit a long jumper. After a pair of free throws by Taylor, McGrady nailed a 16-footer before a thundering dunk and three-point play by Taylor. McGrady tipped in a shot and floated a runner sandwiched around three more points by Taylor.

"The last time, they jumped on us quick and there was a lot of talking going on," Taylor said. "McGrady had a big game and he talked a lot. So when they came to our place, we wanted to show that we could play, too."

The duo scored nine points during a 2:23 span in the fourth quarter, capped by Taylor's short jumper in the lane that gave the Rockets an 89-88 advantage. McGrady's 17-footer with 10:01 to play gave the Magic an 88-87 lead but was his last basket of the game.

"We had no answers for Maurice," McGrady said. "He did a dynamite job inside and out. He got it all started for them."

"We can't keep matching them possession for possession," he continued. "It was definitely our defense that let us down. We could get any shot we wanted, but they excuted well and were the aggressors tonight."

Darrell Armstrong added 23 points for Orlando, which shot 42 percent (36-of-84) and was outrebounded, 49-32.

Houston has won four in a row to remain three games behind Minnesota for the final Western Conference playoff berth.

"This was a big home win against a very good team," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "I thought we had a good defensive effort and we are putting ourselves right in the thick of the battle for the last spot."
