Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks' lack of size hampered them in the first half and eventually prevented them from snatching a win from the Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets overcame shaky free-throw shooting down the stretch and used their interior defense to secure an 85-82 victory over the undersized Hawks.

Neither team made a basket in the final three minutes, a product of Denver's collapsing offense and the Hawks' inability to shoot over the long arms of the Nuggets' defense.

After Jason Terry made two free throws to tie it at 82-82 with 52 seconds left, Atlanta was unable to score despite Denver's struggles at the line.

The Nuggets were just 3-of-6 from the stripe in the final 34 seconds but stifled the Hawks on two key possessions.

Denver led, 83-82, with 24 seconds remaining when Terry missed an 18-foot jumper that would have given Atlanta its first lead of the fourth quarter. Lorenzen Wright missed an easy tip-in and Alan Henderson grabbed the rebound, but his layup was blocked by Kevin Willis.

Ryan Bowen made just 1-of-2 free throws at the other end for Denver but Terry, distracted by the height of Denver's James Posey, threw the ball into the hands of Willis.

"The ball was glued to my hand, I couldn't release it," Terry said. "I had a good shot at it but I took a dribble and it just got stuck. This was a game we should've won."

Following Terry's miscue, Nick Van Exel made 1-of-2 from the line, giving the Hawks an opportunity to tie the game. But Atlanta was out of timeouts and a desperation 3-pointer by Brevin Knight was way off.

Despite his struggles in his final two trips to the line, Van Exel scored eight points in the fourth quarter to help hold off Atlanta's comeback attempt. All three of his field goals in the quarter were driving layups, further demonstrating the Hawks' lack of size on defense.

"Van Exel is a guy that can score points quickly," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "He made a couple of big plays in the lane. That is what good players do."

Atlanta, playing its second game since trading All-Star center Dikembe Mutumbo, was vulnerable inside. Antonio McDyess torched the Hawks in the first half, collecting 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting en route to a 53-43 halftime lead.

However, the Hawks picked up their defnse considerably after halftime, holding the Nuggets to a season low 32 points in the second half.

"We fought like crazy, especially in the second half," Kruger said. "We couldn't quite get (shots) to go down."

Neither could Denver, which shot 39 percent (30-of-76) from the field, 66 percent (22-of-33) from the line and made 3-of-18 from 3-point range.

"Offensively our shots were just not going in," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We had layups and tip-ins and free throws that just weren't falling. On a night like that it is good to get a victory."

McDyess registered his 42nd double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds to go with three blocks. Van Exel had 18 points and 10 assists but missed two key free throws down the stretch for Denver, which has won 11 of its last 13 home games.

Terry finished with 22 points and seven assists and Knight dished out 10 assists. Wright added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks, who finished a 2-3 road trip.
