Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls almost did it again.

Elton Brand scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Bulls nearly squandered a 20-point lead before holding on for 90-75 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Brand recorded his 29th double-double of the season, helping Chicago snap a three-game losing streak against the NBA's third-worst team.

"I know it helps my team out, getting those rehounds, and the points will come," Brand said. "I really focus on getting those rebounds, blocked shots and anything I need to do to help the team."

The Bulls scored the final 12 points to pull away and hand the Grizzlies their third straight loss following a season-high five-game winning streak.

Vancouver pulled within 78-75 on Tony Massenburg's baseline jumper with 4:33 to play, but that turned out to be the Grizzlies' last basket as they missed seven straight shots.

"We can't spot teams 20 points like we did tonight," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "We don't have the ability to come back and win. We just didn't have enough guys show up to play tonight. To me, it takes away everything we've done that was positive on this road trip. That's no knock on Chicago. We didn't play hard and finish it tonight."

The Grizzlies closed the six-game road trip at 3-3.

Brand drove the lane, drew a foul and made a layup but missed the ensuing free throw with 4:13 left. It started the closing 12-0 run that ended on two free throws by Fred Hoiberg with 31 seconds to play.

"The point is, we got the victory," Brand said. "We had the lead and they caught up and we held them off in the fourth quarter. We re finally getting over the hump. We are able to hold those leads in the fourth quarter. That has been one of our problems early on in the season."

Erick Strickland scored 15 points and Grant Long 14 for Vancouver, which was held without a 3-pointer for the first time this season, going 0-of-7.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim also had 14 points on 6-for-16 shooting for the Grizzlies and Mike Bibby dished out 17 assists to tie a United Center record while scoring eight points.

Chicago's reserves outscored Vancouver's bench, 31-25. The Bulls also converted 22 turnovers into 16 points.

Brand had 10 points and Chicago shot 54 percent in the first quarter, building a 29-22 lead.

After shooting nearly 65 percent in the opening period, Vancouver cooled off in the second. Led by Ron Artest's eight points, the Bulls extended their advantage to 53-38 at halftime.

A follow shot by rookie Marcus Fizer gave Chicago a 66-46 lead with 5:19 left in the third quarter. But the Grizzlies scored the last five points of the period to get within 73-63.
