Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- When Steve Francis exited, so did the Houston Rockets' chances.

Rasheed Wallace scored 10 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Portland Trail Blazers took advantage of Francis' foul trouble to rally for a 95-89 victory.

Francis picked up his fifth foul and third of the fourth quarter with 7 1/2 minutes left and his team ahead, 78-76. With Francis out of the game, Wallace scored five points during a 10-3 run as Portland grabbed an 86-81 lead with just under five minutes to go.

After a basket by Hakeem Olajuwon got Houston within 86-83, Francis re-entered the game. But back-to-back baskets by Wallace made it 90-83 with 2:31 left, and the Trail Blazers were never threatened again.

"He had only six shots at the half and we know we have to establish him," Dunleavy said of Wallace. "Our guys did a good job of looking for him and he did a good job of getting open and working the 1-on-1. Rasheed is a terrific player inside and out. We have to put the ball in his hands."

Houston shot 28 percent (5-of-18) and misfired on 5-of-9 free throws in a fourth quarter in which it was outscored, 26-14.

"It was a pretty good game for three quarters and then we had a horrible fourth quarter," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "They made play after big play and we didn't. What bothered me about this game is that we had a chance to win the game but the decisions were not there."

Damon Stoudamire had 18 points and a season-high nine rebounds and Bonzi Wells added 15 points for Portland, which avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season.

Arvydas Sabonis and Steve Smith added 11 points apiece. Smith had five in the final two minutes of the game. Stoudamire also contributed seven assists and four 3-pointers.

Houston received 16 points and 11 rebounds from Olajuwon and 15 points from Shandon Anderson as its four-game winning streak was halted. Francis scored 14 points, despite being hampered by a sore ankle, and Mobley added 13 as the Rockets' starting backcourt shot 10-of-26.

"In the second half, we tried to keep the ball out of Cuttino's and Steve's hands," Stoudamire said. "We wanted other people to shoot the ball and make the shots."

Maurice Taylor was the fifth Houston starter in double figues with 12 points while Walt Williams added 11 off the bench. The Rockets' five-game home-winning streak came to an end.

"We felt like we had this one," Taylor said. "We had a chance to get a couple of blocks and steals and it could have gone our way."

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Stoudamire gave Portland a 60-59 lead with just under eight minutes left in the third quarter. The Rockets closed the period with a 10-4 spurt, capped by Mobley's basket, for a 75-69 lead after three quarters.

The first half saw the Rockets shoot 60 percent (22-of-37), including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, for a 55-48 lead at halftime. Williams had all 11 of his points in the second quarter.

Portland improved to 3-0 against Houston this season.
