Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored 23 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 22 as the Dallas Mavericks used a balanced attack to pull away for a 103-92 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Juwan Howard scored 15 points and Greg Buckner added 12 and seven rebounds for Dallas, which shot 51 percent (38-of-75) and defeated Los Angeles for the 10th straight time.

Steve Nash contributed 10 points and 11 assists and Shawn Bradley came off the bench to add 10 points and 10 boards for the Mavericks.

"I think we played good defense tonight," Nash said. "We played at a high level tonight with lots of energy because we knew coming in to play the Clippers was going to be tough."

Dallas is seventh in the Western Conference, just percentage points behind sixth-place Phoenix.

"We're a pretty good team. Not a great team, but pretty good," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We knew how important of a game this was to us. We did not take them for granted at all."

Lamar Odom had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Eric Piatowski added 16 points for the Clippers, who were trying to win five straight games for the first time since November 10-17, 1995.

"Right now Dallas outnumbers us with the matchups," Odom said. "Once we find out how we match up with them, once we find out how to defense the pick and roll, things like that will be better.

Dallas, which entered the game shooting 38 percent from 3-point range, made just 2-of-12 (17 percent) from beyond the arc. But the Mavericks shot 80 percent (25-of-31) from the free-throw line while the Clippers made 15-of-22 free throws.

Three technical fouls against the Clippers helped the Mavs take control in the third period. Odom received the first technical and Steve Nash made the free throw to tie the score, 59-59, with 6:40 left. Just 16 seconds later, Corey Maggette received a technical and Nash again made the shot to give the Mavs the lead.

Odom, who made 9-of-13 shots, hit a 22-footer to give the Clippers a 61-60 edge with 6:12 left in the third. Buckner took a pass from Howard Eisley and dunked to give Dallas the lead for good, 62-61, with 5:35 remaining.

"I wasn't disappointed with the way we played, I just thought that we never really got any stops so that we couldn't make any kind of run," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said.

Dallas took a 76-70 lead into the fourth and Nowitzki capped an 8-0 surge with a follow shot for an 88-74 advantage with just over seven minutes left. Eisley sank a 3-pointer to give the Mavs their biggest lead, 91-76, with 5:44 to go.

Finley hit 4-of-5 shots in the first quarter when he scored 11 points to help the Mavs open a 32-27 lead.

Dallas' bench helped increase the lead in the second as rookie Eduardo Najera made consecutive baskets before Bradley had a layup for a 40-30 advantage 9 1/2 minutes before halftime.

The Clippers closed the first half with a 7-2 burst as Odom hit a running jumper at the buzzer to trim the margin to 54-50.

Jeff McInnis opened the third with a 3-pointer and Piatkowski followed with a driving layup to give the Clippers a 55-54 edge.
