Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 21 points and John Stockton added 14 as the Utah Jazz used a key run, bridging both halves, to post a 99-82 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Jazz maintained their lead for the best record in the Western Conference by percentage points over Portland. They also improved their Midwest Division edge over San Antonio to a full game.

A dunk by Nazr Mohammed pulled Atlanta into a 41-41 tie with 4:16 left in the second quarter. But Utah outscored the Hawks, 11-3, to take a 52-44 lead at halftime.

Baskets by John Starks and Malone 49 seconds into the second half gave the Jazz a 56-44 advantage, and the lead never dipped below double figures the rest of the way. Back-to-back baskets by Stockton gave Utah a 68-51 lead with 6:42 left in the third quarter.

"I thought we came out early and executed pretty well and our defense was pretty good," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I was disappointed the way we played in the first half. I was impressed with the way they executed in the first half and stayed in the ballgame with us because they set screens and made it difficult for us to guard them for a full 24 seconds."

Greg Ostertag grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Jazz. Malone and Donyell Marshall each had eight boards as Utah held a 44-41 rebounding edge.

Olden Polynice made all five of his shots for 10 points off the bench to go along with six rebounds for the Jazz, who had their five-game winning streak snapped at Phoenix on Sunday.

"It kind of took us a while to get going," Malone said. "After losing a tough game, it takes you a little while to get back into it. In the third quarter, we really started concentrating on defense and our defense led to easy baskets. That's what you have to do."

Utah took its largest lead at 93-72 with 4:48 to play on a 3-pointer by Bryon Russell.

Jason Terry scored 22 points to lead Atlanta, which closed its six-game road trip with four losses after beginning it with a pair of wins. Alan Henderson scored 18 points and Mohammed added 16 on 6-of-11 shooting to go along with nine rebounds.

"We are still trying to get to know each other and re-establish some kind of team chemistry," Terry said. "The chemistry has really been stirred up here in the past few weeks with trades and injuries but I think we have some real positives to look forward to."

Atlanta rookies DerMarr Johnson and Hanno Mottola combined to make just 4-of-13 shots for 12 points.

"I like the look of our club tonight," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "I thought we had an idea of what they were trying to get accomplished. (Hanno) was nervous in the first half, but he's been injured, so this is his third game back. I think he'll be a good player in the league for a long time."

A competiitve first quarter featured eight ties and six lead changes and ended with the game tied at 25-25.

The Hawks have dropped nine straight games at Utah.
