Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards had a new cast of characters but it was the same old result against the Miami Heat.

Brian Grant scored 26 points, including a basket and a three-point play in a decisive fourth-quarter run, to lead the Heat to their 10th straight win over the Wizards, 103-95.

With five new players from the Juwan Howard trade deadline deal, the Wizards gave a spirited effort and took an 80-79 lead when Tyrone Nesby converted 1-of-2 free throws with 8:41 remaining.

But Anthony Mason and Dan Majerle each hit a pair of free throws to ignite a 14-3 run. A 19-foot jumper by rookie Courtney Alexander, one of the acquisitions in the Howard deal, pulled the Wizards within 83-82, but Grant and A.C. Green scored inside to give the Heat a five-point advantage.

After Chris Whitney hit a short jumper in the lane, Grant converted a three-point play and Tim Hardaway connected on a 3-pointer to open a 93-84 lead with 5:24 left.

Miami held its biggest lead at 98-86 after a 19-foot jumper by Hardaway with 3:24 remaining.

"We wore them down," Hardaway said. "We got some easy buckets and just went to the hole in the fourth quarter."

The Wizards, who have lost five straight and 11 of their last 12 games, got no closer than seven points thereafter.

"The run in the fourth quarter was big," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We took it to a five-point lead, then a nine-point lead and went from there. Brian had a great night. He is being very active and the other players are starting to be a little more conscious of him."

Grant matched a career-high with six blocked shots. Hardaway scored 22 points and Mason added 20 and nine rebounds for the Heat, who shot a season-best 56 percent from the field.

"Anytime we get everybody involved and shoot for a high percentage, you got to be pleased," Grant said. "We were very efficient the way we worked the ball around."

"Mason and Grant picked us apart inside," Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton added.

Miami starting shooting guard Eddie Jones pulled his left hamstring with 10:23 left in the first quarter and did not return.

"He has a spasm in his left hamstring," Riley said. "He was too sore to come back into the game."

"I asked if I could go back because I wanted to go out and play," Jones said. "They told me to lay off it and see how I feel tomorrow. I plan on playing tomorrow. I feel fine."

The Heat (34-23) remained one-half game ahead of New York in the Atlantic Division and visit first-place Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Mitch Richmond led the Wizards with 20 points but was just 5-of-19 from the field. Whitney had 18 points.

"Everyone is still trying to get on the same page here and the most important page is defense," Whitney said.

Christian Laettner scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting off the bench. He set season-highs with 18 and 19 points in his first two games with the Wizards after being acquired in the Howard trade.

The Heat hit 12-of-18 shots in the first quarter, but needed a short jumper by Anthony Carter with 33 seconds left to take a 27-26 lead.

Washington scored 10 of the first 15 points in the second quarter as Laettner and Alexander each hit two baskets, giving the Wizards a 36-32 lead.

Miami closed the half with an 8-2 run as Hardaway converted a pair of layups, giving the Heat a 49-47 advantage. Grant scored 16 of his points in the first half.

Washington opened the second half with a 16-8 spurt, opening its biggest lead, 63-57, after three straight baskets by Whitney.
