Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks played an incredible first quarter but still needed some late heroics from Steve Nash to pull out a victory.

Nash, a British Columbia native, scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half as the Mavericks squeaked by the Vancouver Grizzlies, 116-112.

"I had little focus at the start of the game with all the distractions and emotions," Nash said. "But I got it together in the second half."

Dallas shot 82 percent (18-of-22) and scored a season-high 41 points in the first quarter en route to a 19-point lead but needed clutch shooting to pull out the win.

The teams battled down the stretch until Nash put Dallas ahead for good, 106-104, with a driving layup with 2:47 remaining.

"He gave me whatever he had and I think he really wanted to win here tonight," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "He loves to put up a performance in front of his home fans. He's a Canadian through and through, and he loves it here."

The Mavericks scored on every possession thereafter and made 8-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes -- including the last four by Nash -- to seal the victory and bring Dallas within two of the single-season franchise record for road wins.

"We had one of the leaders in Steve Nash, who is able to make all of his free throws," Nelson said. "When we get teams in the bonus, it's a big factor in the game."

Nash made 8-of-13 shots from the floor and all six of his free throws in what will be his last game in Vancouver if the franchise moves after the season.

"It's very sad that this may be my last game here, but it went as well as I could've imagined," he said. "The fans here are so nice to me, they are so supportive. Most likely, I'll never play here again and I wanted to come out of here with a win. I wasn't going to accept anything but a victory here tonight."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points and Michael Finley added 16 and 11 rebounds for the Mavericks, who improved to 19-4 all-time against Vancouver.

Juwan Howard had 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting and nailed a big jumper with 35 seconds to go in his second game since being acquired from Washington.

"As the new guy, you don't want to go out there and do things that are not within the team concept. But with this team, coach gets upset when I pass up shots, so I just went after it," Howard said.

After their remarkable first quarter, the Mavericks wound up shooting 59 percent (46-of-78) and made 18-of-22 from the line.

"We were rolling in the first quarter, I didn't even want to make a substitution," Nelson said. "Instincts said to let these five guys play the whole game until they wear out because they were playing so well, and I enjoyed watching them."

The Grizzlies shot 58 percent (46-of-80) and had a 35-24 rebounding edge but committed 22 turnovers and could not stop Dallas when it counted.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 36 points on 14-of-20 shooting for Vancouver but did not make a shot in the final eight minutes.

"Eventually, we have to start finishing teams off like this and get those close wins," Abdur-Rahim said. "You can't continue to get into a hole like that after the first quarter. We need to play hard in the first and not allow that to happen."

Mike Bibby scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half and dished out nine assists for the Grizzlies, who have lost three in a row and fell to 0-8 at home against Midwest Division foes.

Vancouver trailed, 65-51, at halftime but started the third quarter with a 19-5 run to take a 70-69 lead.

The Mavericks scored 16 of the next 22 points and led by nine with 28 seconds left in the quarter. But the Grizzlies scored the final five points of the period, capped by a long 3-pointer by Bibby that brought them within four.
