Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets must be convinced they will not win another road game.

Nursing a 12-point lead with less than six minutes left, the Nets missed their last nine shots and watched Jamal Mashburn take over down the stretch and lead the Charlotte Hornets to a 91-88 victory.

Mashburn led a decisive 16-1 run with a pair of jumpers and eight free throws. Meanwhile, Nets star guard Stephon Marbury missed his final five shots and had another blocked.

"Mash has been sensational down the stretch lately," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "You need a guy like that on your team and he is that guy for us."

The loss was the 10th straight on the road for the Nets, who are 3-22 away from home after opening the season with three road wins.

The Hornets closed a 4-0 homestand with their fifth straight win and seventh in eight games. The streak follows a stretch in which Charlotte lost 10 of 12.

David Wesley led the Hornets with 26 points and Mashburn finished with 23. Mashburn was just 3-of-18 from the field before converting two clutch shots in the final two minutes.

"David was carrying us for the whole game. I just wanted to take it upon myself down the stretch," Mashburn said. "We can learn from this experience to never give up because no lead is too big to come back from."

A short jumper by Aaron Williams opened an 85-73 lead for the Nets with 6:58 remaining. But New Jersey scored just three points the rest of the way -- a free throw by Williams with 3:21 left and a meaningless dunk at the buzzer by Johnny Newman.

The Nets had no answers for the 6-8 Mashburn, who exploited rookie Kenyon Martin down the stretch.

Mashburn converted a pair of free throws with 5:52 left to ignite the 16-1 run. Otis Thorpe and Eddie Robinson followed with jumpers to pull the Hornets within 85-79 before the free throw by Williams.

Charlotte's P.J. Brown converted two free throws before Mashburn went to work on Martin, hitting a turnaround jumper in the lane with 1:51 left and posting up the rookie again and drawing a foul. His two free throws pulled Charlotte within 86-85 with 1:27 remaining.

After Marbury missed a 3-pointer from the left side, Mashburn hit a nine-foot lane jumper over Martin to give Charlotte an 87-86 lead with 51 seconds left.

"Mashburn hit the shots when it counted and that was the difference in the game," Martin said. "The last two minutes, we just couldn't score."

Marbury drove to the basket on New Jersey's next possession and missed a reverse layup with 32 seconds left.

Nets coach Byron Scott switched Newman on Mashburn, who drew a foul in the lane and converted two free throws with 11 seconds remaining. After Marbury missed a 3-pointer, Mashburn grabbed the rebound, was fouled by Keith Van Horn and hit both free throws with 4.6 seconds left.

"Jamal really turned it on down the stretch," Wesley said. "He got his turnaround going. It's tough to defend that."

Afterwards, a frustrated Scott took thinly veiled verbal shots at Marbury and Van Horn, the team's top players.

"In a game like this, I don't know if we have leaders," Scott said. "Leaders calm the team down, take good shots, and get in good position to get rebounds. The game basically came down to the last few minutes. We had a double-digit lead and we gave the game away with our poor shot selection."

Van Horn, who missed his last four shots, also expressed his frustration, especially in the last two minutes when Marbury missed three shots, including a pair of 3-pointers.

"Our offensive execution the last two minutes was terrible," Van Horn said. "We didn't get the ball in the post and took bad shots. You're supposed to have your best offense the last two minutes but we didn't have anything out there."

Marbury finished with 19 points on 8-of-22 shooting. Van Horn and Newman added 15 apiece.

Each team endured a cold shooting first quarter. The Nets were 7-of-21 from the field while the Hornets missed 18-of-23 shots but held a 17-14 lead.

The Hornets increased their lead to 36-30 on a layup by Baron Davis with 5:28 left in the second quarter. Van Horn and Lucious Harris scored seven points apiece and the Nets closed the half with a 20-6 run to take a 50-42 lead.

A 13-foot jumper by Martin gave New Jersey its biggest lead at 61-47 with 8:25 lead in the third quarter. But Wesley hit three 3-pointers and four free throws to highlight a 22-9 run for the Hornets, pulling them within 70-69 after three quarters.

The Nets opened the fourth quarter with a 15-4 spurt as Marbury converted a 3-pointer and a layup. Williams' jumper with 6:58 left capped the run and turned out to be the Nets' last basket before Newman's game-ending dunk.
