Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Steve Francis scored 21 points to lead the Houston Rockets to their 12th straight victory over a Central Division opponent, a 95-78 defeat of the Chicago Bulls.

Battling for a playoff berth in the powerful Western Conference, Houston overcame an early 12-point deficit and improved its record against the East to 19-4 while remaining perfect against the Central Division.

"We're a pretty good team, sometimes not as good in the West," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We've had a lot of success with the leading teams in the East. But, I have no idea why. Maybe they should move the Mississippi a little further west so we would move."

"We thought we'd come out and blow them out," Francis said. "Instead, we had to buckle down and play defense. Young teams tend to be good frontrunners. They get up and down on you and get confident. That's what happened tonight."

Francis went 7-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line with eight rebounds, but committed nine of Houston's 16 turnovers.

"Tonight, I just couldn't hold onto the ball, but did get it to my teammates when the defense was on me," Francis said.

A layup by Kenny Thomas with 9:10 to play in the third quarter triggered a 10-0 run that gave the Rockets the lead for good. Hakeem Olajuwon hit a turnaround jumper to cap it at 59-49 with 6:13 to play. Olajuwon finished with 17 points.

Houston led 73-62 entering the final period and built the margin to 90-70 on a long jumper by Francis with 3:37 remaining.

The Bulls opened a 16-8 lead when Brand nailed a jumper from the right sideline midway through the first quarter. Chicago held a 29-19 advantage after one period and took its biggest lead when rookie Marcus Fizer began the second quarter with a jumper.

But Houston rallied and took the lead for good on Moochie Norris' 15-footer with 1:49 to go in the second quarter and carried a 47-43 lead into the break.

"We had basically the same pattern that happened the other night," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We went to our bench and lost a margin. We went to our bench and it just wasn't the same. We've got a lot of young guys who have not played extended minutes. They will be fine at some point."

Brand scored 21 points for Chicago, which shot just 37 percent (34-of-91) from the floor. Ron Artest had 13 points and Brad Miller 12 and 10 rebounds who failed to post 20 points after the first quarter.

Houston shot 51 percent (36-of-71) and has won four of its last five road games.
