Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady scored 36 points to lead the Orlando Magic to their third straight win, a 120-94 rout of the reeling Cleveland Cavaliers.

Orlando moved five games above .500 to match a season high and retain sixth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

McGrady had 11 of his 15 first-quarter points when the Magic closed the period with a 16-6 spurt to take a 30-20 lead. Cleveland never threatened thereafter and suffered its third straight loss.

"Tracy set the table for us early," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "He came out and really provided leadership for us. When your best player does that, then everyone else just has to basically fall in line."

"When he was making the shots that he was, 4-of-6 on threes, his first step put the ball on the floor, it was his strong point of his game," said Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman. "He was definitely a tough cover for us tonight."

The point total represents the Magic's largest in regulation this season, topping the 114 they had on November 25 against Atlanta and February 14 against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Reserve center John Amaechi added 16 points and Monty Williams contributed 15 off the bench to help Orlando defeat Cleveland for the 10th time in the last 13 home meetings.

Andre Miller led Cleveland with 22 points and eight assists but could not prevent the Cavaliers from suffering their 15th loss in 17 games.

The Magic also held Cleveland to 43 percent (36-of-84) shooting.

"Our defense, getting stops on defense, changed the whole complexity of the game," Orlando point guard Darrell Armstrong said. "They were getting good shots. They were scoring the basketball and, all of a sudden, we were getting stops."

McGrady keyed runs to close each of the middle two quarters. The All-Star forward netted six of his eight second-quarter points in the final three minutes as the Magic outscored the Cavaliers, 11-6, to open a 58-41 halftime lead.

"The bottom line was that we needed to get out early on them," said Magic forward Mike Miller, who contributed 11 points.

The Cavaliers pulled within 14 points when Clarence Weatherspoon made two free throws with 9:50 left in the third quarter.

But McGrady again sparked the Magic, scoring half of the points during a 10-0 run in the final 2:23 of the period as Orlando took a commanding 88-60 lead.

McGrady picked up where he left off in February, when he reached the 30-point plateau five times and was named NBA Player of the Month.

"I just put that out of my mind," McGrady said. "It was a great honor, definitely. But I've got to move on, got some more to do."

Former Magic forward Chris Gatling scored 14 points in 23 minutes off the bench for Cleveland. But he was ejected with 1:37 left in the third quarter for a flagrant foul on Monty Williams.

"I think Gat was trying to grab his arm and hold his arm," Wittman said. "It was a flagrant and you have to call that. But there is no way the officials could get me to believe that he did that trying to hurt him."
