Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- In a city where Christian Laettner made one of the most famous shots in college basketball history, he made one of the most ill-conceived plays of the NBA season.

Allen Iverson poured in 41 points as the Philadelphia 76ers took advantage of a bizarre offensive foul by Laettner for a 107-102 victory over the Washington Wizards.

A basket by Hubert Davis pulled Washington within 102-100 with 1:20 to play. Sixers guard Eric Snow missed a driving layup 10 seconds later and the Wizards brought the ball upcourt with a chance to tie.

But Laettner, whose jumper at the buzzer gave Duke a victory over Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA Tournament at the Spectrum, was whistled for an offensive foul for running into a Sixer at midcourt without the ball with 1:05 left.

Dikembe Mutombo made 3-of-4 free throws for a 105-100 advantage with 35.8 seconds to go.

After Richard Hamilton's basket made it 105-102 with 29.9 seconds remaining, Iverson capped the scoring with a jumper with 6.6 seconds left for his 16th effort of at least 40 points this season.

"We understood that they were going to come in here and play us like they did," Iverson said. "They had a chance to beat Miami and they had a chance to win the game before that (against New Jersey). It's easier for those guys to play because they are so relaxed. They are just playing the game."

Snow scored 15 points and dished out 11 assists for Philadelphia, which completed its first season sweep of Washington since 1991-92. Mutombo added 14 points and 16 rebounds.

"We didn't do a good job of defending them, but they did a pretty darn good job of executing," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said. "Fortunately, Allen made a couple big shots and Dikembe had some big free throws, a key block and a few crucial rebounds. We just lucked out and held on."

Iverson made 15-of-34 shots and 10-of-13 free throws in his highest scoring effort against the Wizards this season.

"Iverson is a great player," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "He makes impossible shots. He makes plays when there is no play. That's why this team is where they are. Whenever they get into a tight situation, he has the ability to rise above the situation to make plays."

Richard Hamilton scored a career-high 34 points for Washington, which has lost six in a row. Mitch Richmond and rookie Courtney Alexander added 17 points apiece.

"I wanted to go hard," said Hamilton, a native of nearby Coatesville, Pennsylvania. "I didn't want to worry about me playing at home. My teammates did a good job of getting me open."

Philadelphia seemingly had the game in hand in the third quarter, establishing its largest lead at 66-50 with 9:34 remaining. The 76ers led, 84-74, entering the final period before the Wizards rallied.

Alexander had six points as Washington went on a 12-2 run to open the quarter and forge an 86-86 tie with just under nine minutes to play. Iverson scored seven points around a basket by Wizards forward Popeye Jones in a span of a minute to give the Sixers a 93-88 lead.

"I was proud of the fact we fought back to put ourselves in a position where we had a chance to win the game," Leonard Hamilton said. "When you take into consideration the type of season we've been through, for these guys to still be battling, believing that we can still go out and win games, tells a lot about the chemistry and the character that is developing."

Washington fell to 0-10 on the road against Atlantic Division opponents and has dropped seven of its last eight away from home.
